Aurelien Tchouameni apologised to Real Madrid after he skipped their Copa del Rey clash with Villarreal to attend an NBA game.

The France international, who is sidelined with a calf injury, was in the crowd for the Chicago Bulls’ 126-108 win over the Detroit Pistons in Paris on Thursday.

His presence at the Accor Arena, while Madrid fought back from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 at El Madrigal, came under scrutiny from supporters.

Tchouameni subsequently issued an apology, acknowledging he made a mistake by not staying in Spain to cheer on his team-mates.

“I apologise to my club, the coaching staff, my team-mates and the Madrid fans for my presence at an event at a time when we were […] in the cup,” he wrote on social media.

“I have been attentive at all times to what was happening in Villarreal, but I have not done the right thing. [I am] very sorry.”

Tchouameni has not played since a LaLiga defeat to the Yellow Submarine on January 7, when he was replaced just after the hour in a 2-1 loss.

Second-half goals from Vinicius Junior, Eder Militao and Dani Ceballos helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side bounce back to winning ways on Thursday, four days after they lost the Supercopa de Espana final to Barcelona.

Los Blancos will face rivals Atletico Madrid in their Copa quarter-final after the pair were drawn against each other on Friday.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank feels Chelsea have paid over the odds for Mykhaylo Mudryk and believes transfer fees being forked out are “insane.”

The Blues landed the Ukraine international from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal that could be worth £89million (€100m) as they continue to splash the cash following a takeover by a consortium-led by Todd Boehly.

Fellow winger Noni Madueke is also expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge from PSV, giving Graham Potter plenty of options to ponder.

Frank has questioned the fee the Bees’ London paid for Mudryk and wonders how Potter can keep so many wingers happy.

“I think there is a lot of money around in the football world, especially in the Premier League,” he told reporters ahead of the Premier League clash against Leeds United on Sunday.

“Looking from the outside, I think Mudryk is a very good player but 100million, that’s a lot for a player who is showing great signs of potential but probably needs to do a bit more.

“Maybe that’s just price-tags these days, which I think are insane.

“They’ve bought him and then there’s rumours about the PSV guy as well. I think they have enough wingers but that is their issue.”

Reigning Serie A champions AC Milan face a challenging test on Matchday 19 when they travel to the capital for a clash with Lazio.

And fellow title hopefuls Juventus host a similarly formidable opponent when Atalanta visit Turin on Sunday.

Runaway leaders Napoli, meanwhile, should have no trouble at lowly Salernitana.

Elsewhere, Supercoppa Italiana winners Inter Milan entertain Empoli and Roma head to Spezia.

Game of the week: Lazio vs AC Milan (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Lazio are likely to be stubborn hosts when second-placed Milan pay them a visit on Tuesday.

Maurizio Sarri’s men have already bettered their clean sheet total from last season, keeping 10 shut-outs in just 18 outings, compared to nine overall last term.

The visitors are suffering a bad patch of form, following last week’s Coppa Italia exit to Torino with a humbling 3-0 loss to fierce rivals Inter Milan in Wednesday’s Supercoppa Italiana showpiece.

They have dropped points in each of their last two league outings, leaving them nine points behind Napoli, and will look to extend their three-match winning streak against Lazio to get their season back on track.

Juventus vs Atalanta (Sunday, 7.45pm)

A 5-1 defeat at Napoli on Matchday 18 brought an abrupt end to Juventus’ eight-game winning run in Serie A and the Old Lady now need to pick up maximum points against Atalanta to keep the Partenopei in their sights.

Max Allegri’s side sit 10 points behind the leaders, but recent history suggests they will face a tough challenge on Sunday night — they have won only one of their last six meetings with the Bergamo outfit.

La Dea have a spring in their step following an 8-2 victory over Salernitana last weekend, with seven different goalscorers on target for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men.

They followed up with a 5-2 triumph over Spezia in the Coppa Italia last night but it is unlikely they will enjoy similar success in the final third against the Bianconeri, who have won without conceding in each of their last five Serie A home games.

Salernitana vs Napoli (Saturday, 5pm)

A turbulent few days for Salernitana saw them sack boss Davide Nicola on Monday, before rehiring the 49-year-old on Wednesday.

But the Campanians, who have leaked a league-high 35 goals, now face an almighty challenge as they host Napoli — the top scorers in the Italian top flight (44).

Luciano Spalletti’s visitors themselves hit trouble on Tuesday, when they slumped to a penalty shootout exit to Cremonese in their Coppa Italia last-16 clash.

They will expect to leave the Stadio Arechi with a victory though, as the Granata have earned the second-fewest points of any side in the division (two) since November.

Inter Milan vs Empoli (Monday, 7.45pm)

Inter gave their season a huge boost with a big win over Milan in a Supercoppa Italiana clash in Saudi Arabia and return to face mid-table Empoli on Monday night.

The hosts can take confidence from their recent run of results against the Tuscans — they have won all of their last 10 meetings by an aggregate score of 23-9.

Inter have been a real force at the San Siro under Simone Inzaghi, winning more games (22), earning more points (69) and scoring more goals (69) at home than any other side in the division since their manager’s arrival in July 2021.

Both sides have enjoyed success when shooting from distance this term — the pair rank joint-second for goals scored from outside of the box in Serie A (five each).

Spezia vs Roma (Sunday, 5pm)

Roma must continue to churn out results in order to push for a top-four finish and a trip to 15th-placed Spezia is next up for the Giallorossi.

The visitors have earned the joint-most points against teams in the bottom half of the table this term with 25 (eight wins, one draw).

Jose Mourinho’s men are also unbeaten in their last eight road trips (five wins, three draws), notably coming back from two goals down to earn a share of the spoils at Milan on their last away encounter.

After a goalless draw with Lecce and a 1-0 win at Torino, Spezia could keep a clean sheet in three Serie A games in a row for the first time.

The weekend’s other games

Verona vs Lecce (Saturday, 2pm)

Fiorentina vs Torino (Saturday, 7.45pm)

Sampdoria vs Udinese (Sunday, 11.30am)

Monza vs Sassuolo (Sunday, 2pm)

Bologna vs Cremonese (Monday, 5.30pm)

Gary Neville believes Jim Ratcliffe would “do the right thing” by Manchester United if he were to complete a takeover.

The Glazer family announced back in November they were exploring options for new investment including the possibility of a sale of the club, opening the door for prospective bidders to make their move to complete a takeover.

This week, Ratcliffe, who previously failed with a takeover bid for Chelsea, announced his intention to enter the bidding process for United, his boyhood club.

Neville feels that Ratcliffe could be the ideal candidate to take stewardship should a takeover be completed, though urged caution on what a takeover would entail.

“The main thing is the Glazers leave as quickly as possible, but the second thing is if whoever takes over, if they could hand it over to people who have feelings for the club, that would be great,” he told Sky Sports.

“Jim Ratcliffe, he was born in Manchester, he knows the area. If he wins it, I think there would be a lot of very happy Manchester United fans as he would want to do the right thing by the club. I’m sure he would.

“I don’t think that United can afford to be with another investment fund that would expect a return on the money, that’s what worries me about private equity coming into football because, ultimately, they want a return on their investment.

“It might be that United aren’t like this club here [Manchester City] or Newcastle or other clubs who have benefactors, who are willing to let them live debt free, not leverage the club, and United need a debt-free football club with someone who is willing to put money into it.”

Asked what the priority for any new owner taking charge of United should be, Neville outlined performances on the field and improving the club infrastructure as the two most crucial elements.

“The priority for the new owner has to be winning, a winning Manchester United club is difficult to stop, we’ve seen that in the past. At that point, United become a very dangerous football club,” he added.

“The priority has to always be football performance. Then you’re talking about fan experience, which means the stadium has to be world class, and it’s not at this moment in time, it falls behind many stadiums that you come to.

“There needs to be investment in the team to get them winning and investment in the facilities, the fan experience. For me, they would be the two priorities.”

Premier League leaders Arsenal host third-place Manchester United on Sunday in a potentially pivotal match in the title race.

The Gunners will be looking to protect their advantage at the top of the table, while United could cut the gap between themselves and the North Londoners to five points with a victory.

Ahead of the latest battle between two of the English top flight’s fiercest enemies, we have picked out a combined XI from the two sides.

Goalkeeper: Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

David de Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history and is still performing at a high level at 32 years old.

Yet the decision to opt for Aaron Ramsdale is a relatively simple one. The Arsenal keeper has only conceded 14 league goals all season and his distribution skills make him a vital cog in Mikel Arteta’s team.

Right-back: Ben White (Arsenal)

This is an area where United could do with an upgrade, with Diogo Dalot competing with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Arsenal were already strong in the position with Takehiro Tomiyasu available before central defender Ben White was shifted over to the right. Combining defensive solidity with ability on the ball, the £50million signing is our choice at right-back.

Centre-back: Raphael Varane (Manchester United)

Both teams have struggled with this position in recent years but now look strong. In his second season at Old Trafford, Raphael Varane is playing his best football alongside Lisandro Martinez.

Varane was instrumental in helping France make the World Cup final and has emerged as the leader of United’s defence.

Centre-back: William Saliba (Arsenal)

There were question marks over William Saliba’s attitude and desire to play for Arsenal prior to his summer return from a loan spell at Marseille.

Such worries were soon cast aside, with the 21-year-old proving to be a revelation this season. Possessing defensive nous alongside technical ability, he has quickly become the senior partner alongside Gabriel.

Left-back: Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Luke Shaw faced stiff opposition against two fine left-backs from Arsenal in the form of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney.

After a shaky start under Erik ten Hag, Shaw has embedded himself in the manager’s plans. He has even been trusted as a central defender in crucial matches but his attacking ability makes left-back his best role.

Central midfield: Casemiro (Manchester United)

For the defensive role in central midfield, we had a straight fight between Casemiro and Arsenal’s Thomas Partey. Ultimately, the Brazilian has just about made the greater impression this season.

Casemiro is arguably the best midfielder that United have signed since Michael Carrick and he has been crucial to their improvement. Arsenal will be delighted that he is suspended for this match.

Central midfield: Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)

After his very early transfer to Real Madrid aged 16 and a number of subsequent loans, Martin Odegaard has finally found a home at the Emirates.

The much-travelled Norwegian’s passing ability has never been in doubt and he is now displaying a cutting edge. He has scored eight goals in 17 Premier League games this season, which included last weekend’s long-range strike at Tottenham.

Central midfield: Christian Eriksen (Manchester United)

For the final midfield slot there was a lot of competition, with Granit Xhaka enjoying an unlikely redemption story at Arsenal and Bruno Fernandes rediscovering his best form.

Christian Eriksen has been every bit as crucial as Casemiro in United’s rise. Playing much deeper than we were used to seeing him at Spurs, the Dane has added understated class to Ten Hag’s team.

Right wing: Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

This is one of the most straightforward choices in the side, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka excelling in a position that is still something of a problem at the Red Devils, despite the signing of Antony.

The England winger had a very productive World Cup and has scored six goals and assisted seven for the Gunners in 18 Premier League appearances this term.

Left wing: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Though Marcus Rashford was up against Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli for the spot on the left, this is another relatively easy decision, given the form of the Three Lions ace.

He has scored 16 goals across all competitions this season, which includes eight goals in as many appearances since the season resumed after the World Cup.

Centre forward: Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal)

We could have picked Rashford as a striker to include Martinelli but as we are picking players in the positions where they generally play, there was an obvious choice at centre forward.

Gabriel Jesus will not be available after picking up a knee injury at the World Cup, yet his industry and skill were a vital reason for Arsenal’s flying start.

Brighton and Hove Albion head coach Roberto De Zerbi is hopeful Moises Caicedo will complete the season at the AMEX Stadium following Chelsea’s bid for the midfielder.

The Blues reportedly saw a £55 million bid for the Ecuador international rejected on Thursday, with the Seagulls valuing the 21-year-old much higher and not willing to lose his services midway through the campaign.

While Chelsea could return with a fresh approach, having shown no limitations on splashing the cash since Todd Boehly’s takeover ahead of the campaign, De Zerbi is hopeful the player will not push for an exit.

However, he admitted it will be difficult for Brighton to retain Caicedo’s beyond the end of the campaign if he continues on his current track.

“Caicedo is very important for us, it’s difficult to change now for another player inside the season. I hope he finishes the season with us,” he told reporters ahead of the Premier League clash against Leicester City on Saturday.

“In the transfer market, it is always difficult to give one answer. When there are some bigger teams, they want the power player, it’s good news for us. The best solution is he finishes the season with us and, next summer, it’s then better to change team.

“I don’t know if he will leave [at the end of the season] but if Caicedo continues to play like this, like the last few games, it’s possible he can leave for another team.”

De Zerbi says Brighton can cope without Leandro Trossard, who is closing in on a move to Arsenal.

“The situation was difficult, I understood he wanted to leave. I’m sorry for the last period because I prefer when people are clear, not when there are some differences, but we will see,” the Italian said.

“I think we are a good team, we can play well with Leandro and without Leandro. I think in the transfer market, you can always improve, you can always buy new players.

“But we’re at a good level now. The players in our squad are very good, and it’s not so easy to improve this squad. I think the club, if there was a possibility to improve the squad, will do something.”

Memphis Depay has completed a transfer to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona.

The Netherlands international, who was given permission to train with Atletico on Thursday, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Civitas Metropolitano.

Atletico are reportedly paying an up front free of €3million to Barca for a player who was due to be out of contract in July, potentially rising to €4m.

Depay joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Lyon ahead of the 2021-22 season, linking up again with Ronald Koeman, for whom he had played with the Oranje, but Koeman was fired by the Blaugrana at the end of October 2021.

Xavi was hired a week later and never appeared to have quite the same trust in Depay.

His first 11 LaLiga appearances were all as a starter, but after Xavi’s appointment only nine of his next 17 top-flight outings came from the start.

Depay was hampered by the January 2022 arrivals of Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore.

While the latter two have since departed, the addition of Raphinha in pre-season brought more competition for places.

As such, Depay leaves having made just two LaLiga appearances this season and none since September.

Depay is a necessary addition for Atletico, however.

Joao Felix left on loan to Chelsea, while Matheus Cunha joined Wolves on a temporary deal that has reportedly already met the conditions required to make it a permanent agreement.

Despite winning neither of their past two games, Atletico are fourth in LaLiga, ahead of Villarreal and Real Betis on goal difference.

Depay could make his debut when Atletico host Real Valladolid on Saturday.

Guardiola’s outburst

Micah Richards was left stunned by Pep Guardiola’s “scathing” post-match interview after Manchester City’s win over Tottenham as the Spaniard took aim at his players and supporters.

An impressive second-half showing saw City come from two goals down to win 4-2 over Spurs but Guardiola was left unimpressed with his side’s performance.

The 52-year-old criticised his players and the club’s home support for their lack of “passion” and “fire” in front of what he perceived to be a flat Etihad last night.

Reacting to the eye-catching interview, former City defender Richards told Sky Sports: “It was scathing, wasn’t it.

“When we normally see Pep’s interviews, they’re very sarcastic, but today he came out and it was almost like he was saying he’s had enough of the situation of producing something so good, but no one seems to be satisfied.

“When you start going and talking about the fans, it’s a difficult situation.

“When the fans boo, it’s never acceptable, but it’s like he’s taken that really personally. I thought that interview was like he’s at the end of his tether.”

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher disagreed, adding: “It was a brilliant interview. Pep Guardiola has not been in this position that often where he feels he has to send a rocket to everyone.

“Not many managers can get away with criticising their own supporters. Jurgen Klopp did it in his early time at Liverpool when a lot of supporters left before the end of the game.

“He’ll be fine, he’s not going to lose the supporters, he’s god here to supporters and he knows that.”

Lamps shines light on January plans

Frank Lampard insists Everton are working hard to get deals over the line before the January transfer window slams shut.

The stakes could not be higher for the Toffees ahead of tomorrow’s clash with fellow Premier League strugglers West Ham.

But Lampard, 44, has not given up hope of bringing in reinforcements to lift the mood, with a particular focus on beefing up his options in attack.

He said: “We absolutely want to help the squad — we have said it a lot. We want to make the squad stronger.

“I am aware everyone is trying to do the same thing and teams around us are working on their squads, getting competition in forward areas.

“We know we need more competition, more of a clinical nature to us at the top end of the pitch.

“That’s a reality we have to understand. We must try and improve it.

“It’s not an easy window but people are working towards trying to bring players in. I as a coach know we need to help it.”

Duran needs time or will come undone

Unai Emery insists incoming Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran needs time to make his mark in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old Colombia international is set to join Villa after an agreement was reached with Chicago Fire for a reported £18million move.

Danny Ings’ imminent departure for West Ham leaves Duran and Ollie Watkins as the Midlands outfit’s only options up front but Emery has suggested his new arrival will not be thrown straight in.

Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Southampton, the Spanish boss said: “We can’t give him the responsibility, as a 19-year-old, to play as a striker in the Premier League against the best teams in the world.

“I want to help him firstly with his adaptation: hopefully that will happen quickly. I know that he’s coming as a 19-year-old and he will need time to know his team-mates, our ideas, and playing against important players in every session here and against opposition teams.

“We are going to help him. The responsibility now, as a number nine and a striker, is for [Ollie] Watkins. We want to add him [Duran] to help us.

“I want to balance the squad by trying to get another striker but only with the idea to improve us.”

Cooper: Longer Lingard is here, the better

Steve Cooper has admitted he does not know how long Jesse Lingard will be at Nottingham Forest but wants it to be as long as possible.

Lingard, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, surprised many when he joined newly-promoted Forest following his release from Manchester United last summer.

The 30-year-old initially struggled to settle at the City Ground but was hitting an encouraging patch of form prior to his injury in December.

Speaking on the Diary of the CEO podcast this week, the midfielder revealed how much he is enjoying life with the Tricky Trees after a difficult end to his time at Old Trafford.

Asked how long the England international will stick around at Forest, Cooper, 43, said: “My honest answer is, I don’t know.

“With regards to his situation here, he is very much part of what we’re doing on and off the pitch.

“Even with the games he hasn’t played recently because of injury, you can see his engagement in the dressing room and by the side of the dugout.

“It’s just generally how he is every day. When you see him and when you don’t, he’s a very infectious, hard-working, committed lad.

“We’re really enjoying working with him. How long it will be for — the longer the better, for me. But we don’t know.

“The main thing for Jesse at the minute is to get him back fit and playing. We’re not looking beyond that.”

Liverpool sign Taylor

Liverpool have announced the signing of midfielder Miri Taylor from Los Angeles side Angel City FC.

The Kent-born 22-year-old spent one season with the National Women’s Super League side, making 11 appearances.

Taylor was selected by Angel City in the 2022 draft after coming through the ranks at Chelsea.

After joining the Reds, she said: “When I went to America, I always imagined coming back to the WSL — that was always my dream, to play football in England at the highest level I can.”

Antonio Conte believes Tottenham have collectively forgotten how to “suffer” and grind out results after their capitulation against Manchester City.

Spurs blew a two-goal lead at the interval to slide to defeat against the Premier League champions on Thursday, going down to a 4-2 loss at the Etihad Stadium.

The result keeps the north London outfit well adrift of the top four, with a five-point gap between them and fourth-placed Newcastle United, with the Magpies also possessing a game in hand.

For Conte, whose long-term future at Tottenham remains a cloudy prospect, the manager thinks his side have lost their readiness to battle through the difficult moments this season, and he challenged them to show a “nasty” streak.

The Spurs spirit will next be put to the test at Fulham on Monday evening, with the Cottagers just two points adrift of Tottenham.

“I think that maybe we have to improve the spirit, the collaboration, the will and the desire to suffer,” Conte said. “Maybe we have forgotten to suffer and to understand that.

“If we want to win the game, sometimes you have to stay there to suffer and defend the result, [with] the will and desire to not concede a goal.”

Defeat to City marked a third loss in five Premier League games since Tottenham returned to domestic action following the mid-season World Cup break.

A draw with Brentford and a victory over Crystal Palace have been their other results, along with an unconvincing FA Cup win over third-tier Portsmouth.

Conte remains insistent he is seeing improvement from his side up to a point, saying: “I think that we are making progress in my opinion, in my mind, in some aspects.

“[But] in other aspects, I think that we have to come back like last season and be a bit more solid, a bit more focused, a bit more nasty.

“I think that we have to try to find the same solidity as last season and to learn again to suffer at the moment that we have to suffer. I think that we are [headed] in the right direction from my experience.”

Nicolo Zaniolo has rejected a new contract at Italian side Roma and could be set for a January move to the Premier League.

The midfielder, 23, has featured 17 times in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s side, who sit seventh in Serie A.

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham and West Ham are both interested in signing Zaniolo with the former having shown interest in the summer market last year.

Despite having scored only one league goal this season, the playmaker is highly rated by Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici, who are looking to bring in a creative spark this month.

The North London club are reported to be ahead of the Hammers in the race for Zaniolo’s signature, having already made one offer for his services.

It is believved that Roma would be willing to accept a loan with an obligation to buy, making a move more likely within the next 11 days.

The 11-cap Italian international is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or centre forward, although reports in the summer suggested that Conte would attempt to utilise him as a wing-back.

With a valuation of £35million, it is unlikely that Spurs will pay outright for the 6ft 2in maestro but they could accelerate a potential loan move after cooling their interest in Leandro Trossard.

In other news

Chelsea have enquired about the availability of Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma but have received no encouragement over a potential deal with their London rivals, say The Telegraph.

According to The Mirror, Jude Bellingham is set to request a meeting with Borussia Dortmund to discuss his transfer preferences in the summer after indicating he would prefer a move to Spain over England.

Reports from 90Min suggest that Aston Villa are keen on bringing Lyon striker Moussa Dembele to the Midlands with the Frenchman’s contract expiring in the summer.
