Chelsea’s winless run extended to six games as Tottenham heaped yet more misery on Graham Potter with a 2-0 win in north London.

Potter’s side went down to second-half goals from Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane in a match where they rarely threatened and, despite a promising first period, visibly crumbled once Spurs took the lead.

Chelsea looked bereft of attacking ideas, and have now scored just a single goal in their last half-dozen outings in all competitions.

Potter’s task of hauling his side back into contention for the Premier League’s top four now looks increasingly insurmountable, with little on display against Tottenham to suggest the club’s huge January transfer outlay is paying off.

The visitors received an early blow when Thiago Silva, back in the side having sat out the defeat to Southampton, was forced off with an injury to his left knee. Potter sent on Wesley Fofana for his second substitute appearance since returning to fitness.

The visitors were the more confident on the ball in the first half, working in neat triangles and playing the game largely in the Spurs half though they were unable to find a final, penetrating pass.

Joao Felix had a fair sight of goal, finding space after driving through the middle and striking his shot firmly but straight at Fraser Forster, as Chelsea’s struggles in front of goal under Potter persisted.

Spurs’ best hope looked like coming on the break, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison showing signs of promise when they were given the chance to run at Chelsea.

It was the home team that had the best chance of the first half. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg collected the ball centrally 20 yards out and drilled an effort at goal that was deflected brilliantly against the post by the sliding leg of Fofana.

Chelsea’s frustrations were all too familiar. Raheem Sterling, their best player in the first half with his penetrating runs down the left, tried to take matters into his own hands, cutting in from the touchline and firing towards Forster’s far corner, the Tottenham goalkeeper diving well to his left to beat the ball away.

The first half ended in confusion and VAR controversy. Hakim Ziyech was late on Richarlison, and as players from both sides squared up to each other the Moroccan appeared to put a hand in the face of Emerson Royal.

A first video check resulted in a red card for Ziyech, but referee Stuart Attwell was then prompted to view the pitch-side monitor and, after reviewing the incident, the red card was rescinded.

The half had produced little to excite either set of supporters, but within seconds of the re-start, the game exploded into life and Tottenham led.

Kulusevski broke into the box down the right and fed the overlapping Royal. His low shot was stopped by Kepa Arrizabalaga, but as the goalkeeper looked to drop onto the loose ball, Enzo Fernandez scooped it out of his grasp, and his weak clearance allowed Skipp to steal in front of Felix and fire Spurs into the lead.

The goal rocked Chelsea, and the confidence in midfield with which they had moved the ball seemed to desert them.

Kai Havertz, standing in again as a makeshift number nine, cut an increasingly frustrated figure, never quite finding the right runs or angles when Chelsea were in possession.

Their problems were thrown into stark relief by the simplicity of Tottenham’s second goal.

A corner whipped in from the right was flicked on neatly by Eric Dier six yards out, dropping at the far post for Kane who had time and space to sweep the ball home.

Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk blasted over from 25 yards five minutes from time, a moment which seemed to announce definitively that Chelsea had run out of ideas.

Soon, they had run out of time. Spurs ran out deserved winners.

Marcus Rashford was passed fit to start for Manchester United in the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United.

Rashford had been a doubt for Sunday’s game at Wembley after coming off in the 88th minute of Thursday’s Europa League playoff-round victory against Barcelona with what appeared to be a slight injury concern.

However, the in-form forward, who has scored 24 goals in 37 games this season, was named in a forward line alongside Wout Weghorst and Antony, who came off the bench to score the winner against Barca at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian replaced Jadon Sancho in attack, with the only other change seeing Diogo Dalot come in for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Callum Wilson returned to the starting line-up for Newcastle in place of Alexander Isak, with Loris Karius coming in for the suspended Nick Pope to make his competitive debut for the club.

Bruno Guimaraes was back from suspension, replacing Elliot Anderson in the only other change from last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron named either side of Wilson in attack for Eddie Howe’s men.

Simone Inzaghi feels Inter must “do more” after they fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Bologna on Sunday.

Riccardo Orsolini fired home a 76th-minute winner to give the hosts victory at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara and inflict another blow to Inter’s already slim chances of catching runaway Serie A leaders Napoli.

Inter have now failed to score in two consecutive away games in Serie A for the first time since April 2018, and Inzaghi says the Nerazzurri must improve if they are to get back to winning ways.

“There will be a lot of talk about the defeat and there will be criticism, but I’m the coach and I’m primarily responsible,” he said.

“We have to say that even if the result had been different, we couldn’t have been happy with our first half.

“We have to analyse and understand why these drops happen to us after the European matches, we have to do more and better.”

Inter’s lacklustre display, which saw them concede at least nine shots in a Serie A first half for only the second time this season, came after Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Porto in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie.

Inzaghi is unsure why they failed to follow up that impressive performance with another strong showing, saying: “If you go to watch matches, after the Champions League we often have some problems.

“Then away from San Siro the problem becomes even more pronounced and we have to try to do better.

“Today’s first half was insufficient, the second was better, but in the moment in which we had created the conditions to win the game, we conceded goals.”

Asked whether he felt let down by his players, Inzaghi replied: “Betrayed no, they have always given me everything both in the match and in training.

“I’m sorry because we are Inter and we have to do more.”

A toothless attacking display from Inter saw them beaten 1-0 by Bologna on Sunday as Riccardo Orsolini scored to give the hosts all three points.

The Nerazzurri had four shots on target without scoring at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara as Napoli’s charge towards a first Serie A title in more than two decades received yet another boost.

Musa Barrow saw an early goal disallowed for offside, though it would matter little as Orsolini fired home a 76th-minute winner to clinch victory and put another dent in Inter’s already slim title hopes.

With an 18-point deficit to overturn, catching runaway leaders Napoli now looks a hugely improbable prospect for Inter as they may now have to focus on fending off the likes of Roma and Milan for second spot.

Bologna thought they were ahead after 12 minutes through a fine finish from Barrow, but a VAR review ruled the offside Nicolas Dominguez as having blocked Andre Onana’s view.

The hosts continued to look the more threatening as Roberto Soriano hit the crossbar, though Lautaro Martinez should have done better when he sent a free header wide of the post.

Clear-cut chances for both teams continued to be few and far between as the game went into the break goalless, but Hakan Calhanoglu missed a golden opportunity shortly after the interval when he blazed over.

Soriano saw a shot blocked, before Edin Dzeko came off the bench to force a decent save out of Lukasz Skorupski.

The deadlock would be broken with 14 minutes to play, though, as Orsolini latched onto Jerdy Schouten’s throughball before firing home his fourth goal in five matches to claim an impressive victory.

Kieran Tripper does not understand why people are “kicking off” at Newcastle United’s perceived time-wasting after Erik ten Hag called it “annoying”.

The Manchester United manager made the comment ahead of Sunday’s EFL Cup final meeting with Newcastle at Wembley, saying thee Magpies are an “annoying team to play against”.

Eddie Howe’s men have the ball in play for just 52.3 per cent of a match, the second lowest in the Premier League this season behind Leeds United.

But Howe’s tactics are working as Newcastle are competing for European qualification while also having the chance to end a 54-year major trophy drought against the Red Devils.

Trippier is confused over the criticism his team is receiving, telling reporters: “I love it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

“But I have experienced it a lot in Spain. It’s about knowing when to slow a game down. If the opposition are having more of the ball and are on top, of course you’ve got to kill the game. You’re not going to take a quick throw-in and say, ‘Carry on’. You have to manage the game.

“Some teams are not happy with us this season, but it’s about being clever in that moment, about using your experience. Opposition fans are not going to like it either, because it’s against their team. But as a neutral, I think it’s good to see. I don’t see why everyone’s kicking off about it, it’s good!”

Asked whether Newcastle plan to use the same tactics at Wembley, Trippier replied: “Of course we will.

“You’ve got to have that mentality. If you want to win, if you want to be successful, you have to be cute in every single game.

“You look at teams like Real Madrid and how successful they have been, and they’ve had players like Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, and they were the best at it. If you want to be successful, you have to manage the game well, and at the right time.”

Diego Simeone believes Real Madrid receive preferential treatment from referees after Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa was red carded during Saturday’s derby draw.

The match finished 1-1 with 18-year-old Alvaro Rodriguez coming off the bench to score a late equaliser after Jose Gimenez had headed Atleti in front.

Despite Simeone’s men putting yet another dent in their rivals’ LaLiga title hopes, he was aggrieved not to pick up all three points and highlighted what he perceives as refereeing bias towards Madrid after Correa was sent off for an elbow to the chest of Antonio Rudiger.

“A contact is not a blow,” Simeone told DAZN. “Football is a physical game.

“If I’m not mistaken, Rudiger measures 1.94 metres and if it was apparently such a brutal blow, it would have left him sitting down, but he immediately gets up.

“It may be a yellow [card] but sending a player off for that, there would be no players left on the field.

“It’s the same story. It is normal, and it has become normal [referees favouring Madrid] and that’s not right and it would be nice if we could all compete in the same way.”

Correa’s dismissal was Atleti’s third in three meetings with Madrid this season after Stefan Savic’s red card during a 3-1 extra-time loss in the Copa del Rey quarter-final and Mario Hermoso’s sending off in September’s league defeat.

Simeone is frustrated by favouritism towards Carlo Ancelotti’s men, especially at the Santiago Bernabeu, saying: “In the Copa del Rey, they could have sent off Dani Ceballos for a foul that was a red.

“Today, Angel’s foul they saw it that way. You have all seen it, there are things that are very clear.

“[VAR] can go either way, sometimes in your favour, sometimes against you.

“However, every time we come here [to the Bernabeu], it goes against us.”

Despite ending a run of four straight games away from home against Madrid without scoring, Simeone felt his team should have picked up all three points, declaring: “We are left with the feeling that we could have won the game.

“We knew that Madrid at the end of games are very dangerous.

“We overcame Reinildo’s injury, also recovered from Correa’s sending off and took the lead. We could have defended better so as not to concede the equaliser, but we must continue on this positive path.”

Manchester City are interested in bringing Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister to the Etihad, according to the Daily Star.

The midfield maestro has been linked with a move away from the Seagulls since he returned from Qatar with a World Cup winners medal and Pep Guardiola could pounce when the transfer window opens.

Mac Allister, 24, has featured in 19 Premier League games for the South Coast side this season, scoring five times as Roberto De Zerbi’s men continue to impress.

Brighton currently sit eighth but have the chance to overtake both Liverpool and Fulham ahead of them when they play their games in hand.

And the Argentina international has been a key part of a high-pressing setup that has seen the club pick up impressive wins over Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in 2022-23.

Guardiola believes the midfielder would be the perfect addition to his world-class squad and would be willing to meet Brighton’s £70million valuation.

The Spaniard is keen to freshen up his squad after a mediocre season so far has left the champions chasing Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Mac Allister’s contract runs until 2025, putting the Seagulls in control of the situation ahead of what is set to be another busy summer of spending for most clubs.

In other news

Olivier Giroud is open to a move back to the Premier League this year and West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Brentford are all keen to secure the Frenchman’s services, say The Sun.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United are targeting Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Italian sources suggest that Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid are following Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, who could leave the Serie A giants in the summer.

Mykhailo Mudryk has endured a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge.

The electric winger introduced himself to the Premier League with a lively debut against Liverpool — but he is yet to contribute with a goal or assist.

Along with Enzo Fernandez, the Ukrainian was the headline of a big-spending revamp for Chelsea in January — his own fee was an eye-watering £89million.

Ahead of Chelsea’s London derby clash at Tottenham, we take a look at how Graham Potter can unlock Mudryk’s full potential.

Bad Blues form

The boos that echoed around Stamford Bridge last Saturday after the dour 1-0 defeat to Southampton were indicative of the mood at Chelsea.

The Blues have failed to win any of their last five matches, drawing three and losing two — scoring only one goal in the process.

The lack of a focal point is noticeable and as a result, Potter finds himself in firing line after Todd Boehly’s rampant winter shopping spree.

To ensure his place in the dugout is secure, Potter must get Mudryk — and Chelsea’s attack as a whole — firing on all cylinders.

Raw talent

Expectations for Mudryk were high after a series of impressive performances in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk — where he scored three goals and assisted two.

On his debut at Anfield, he put on a dynamic display, breezing past opponents and dancing through the Liverpool defence with his quick feet.

However, since then, his rawness has been evident, with heavy touches and a lack of decisiveness in the attacking third costing Chelsea in crucial moments.

For the Blues, he is yet to have an effort on target, missing two big chances, losing 15 duels and being dispossessed 30 times in 173 Premier League minutes.

It has been a sharp reminder for fans that Mudryk still has a lot of developing to do.

Send support

Mudryk loves receiving the ball early and in space to give him the chance to take on his opponents — one of his best qualities.

Against West Ham, he cut a particularly frustrated figure as Marc Cucurella opted against feeding the forward on a number of occasions.

Chelsea’s No15 has also often been left isolated, having to beat several players to get close to the goal.

In part, this has come as a result of Potter’s latest formation change, switching to a four-man defence from the back three he deployed against Liverpool.

Subsequently, Cucurella has dropped deeper to cover and is not given the same licence to assist Mudryk in the attack.

Adding support will help get the 22-year-old on the ball where he is at his best and give him more freedom to beat defenders in dangerous areas.

Kalidou’s approval

Chelsea centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly praised Mudryk for his acceleration and ability on the ball.

He said: “They are all good, but Mykhailo [Mudryk] — I was following Mykhailo for a long time because we were in contact on Instagram, so I know him a little bit.

“He’s really, really good in training — really fast, good with the ball — and Joao Felix also, everybody knows him.

“When they have the ball in their feet, there is like some magic also, it’s good for us.”

Earning his Spurs

Despite the ongoing absence of former Blues boss Antonio Conte — who is recovering from gallbladder surgery — Tottenham were able to bounce back from their shock loss to Leicester, beating West Ham 2-0 to move into fourth ahead of Matchday 25.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been a difficult place for the top six to come to, with even Manchester City falling to defeat.

Chelsea will need their flying wingers to disrupt the Spurs defence to have a chance of coming away with a result.

A win would relieve a lot of the pressure Potter is facing and making sure Mudryk shines could be the key to coming away with all three points.

Erik ten Hag has transformed Manchester United.

The 53-year-old is shaping the team in his image and has developed players who were surplus to requirements last year.

United finished sixth in the Premier League last season and extended their trophyless run to five seasons.

However, they have the perfect opportunity to put that to bed as they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final and Ten Hag deserves a lot of credit for his work so far.

Lethal Rashford

One of the most eye-catching aspects of Ten Hag’s reign is how he has improved individuals.

Marcus Rashford is the obvious example — he is in world-class form and has become one of the most lethal forwards in Europe.

The 25-year-old has scored 14 goals in the Premier League, nine clear of next-highest scoring team-mate Bruno Fernandes (five).

He is brimming with confidence and has been taking on opposition defenders at will — completing a team-high 30 take-ons, with Fernandes (16) once again ranking second at the club.

Unfortunately for United, England star Rashford is a doubt for Sunday’s clash and Anthony Martial has been ruled out.

Iron fist

Notorious disciplinarian Ten Hag has certainly stamped his authority on the Old Trafford dressing room.

In late December, Rashford was dropped from the starting line-up for being late to a team meeting because he overslept.

Furthermore, there were strong rumours in the summer that Ten Hag laid down five commandments to his squad, including an alcohol ban, no personal chefs and a warning that late players will be dropped.

He also insisted on body mass index checks and informed unhappy players to come to him with their problems rather than agents.

The Dutch manager’s strong influence off the pitch has likely been vital in ensuring success on it.

Player deployment

Ten Hag’s use of players has been fascinating — specifically new signing Wout Weghorst.

The Dutchman has been playing as a No10 behind Rashford. This baffled many but the thinking behind this is clear — and the results have been positive.

Despite being seen largely as a target man, Weghorst is an excellent presser and he is currently being used to screen and stop the opposition’s central midfielders from controlling the game.

Per 90 in the Premier League, the 30-year-old has won possession in the final third the joint-most often of the United squad (1.18 times).

Ten Hag is not afraid to take risks with how he utilises his players.

Learning from the best

Ten Hag met with Sir Alex Ferguson to dine on Tuesday night and revealed that the legendary former United manager gave him some advice.

He said: “I always enjoy speaking with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience — he wants to share it, he wants to help and support.

“Manchester United is his club and he feels so committed. We are [getting on] well. It was a great night and I look forward to the next night with him.”

As far as seeking advice goes, it is hard to get much better than Ferguson.

High intensity

United’s intensity off the ball is on a completely different level than it has been in recent seasons.

If you compare their defensive numbers compared to last season, it makes for a very interesting story. United have made more tackles per 90 (17.79 to 15.29) than last year in the Premier League.

They have also won possession in the attacking third (5.38 to 4.37), middle third (23 to 22.87), and defensive third (29 to 27.26) more frequently.

The numbers are very similar but football is a game of fine margins and United have been a much more intense side to play against.

Marcus Thuram will leave Borussia Moenchengladbach at the end of this season when his contract expires.

As a result, the 25-year-old French forward is garnering plenty of interest from top European clubs.

Thuram has scored 14 goals in all competitions this season for Gladbach, having been part of France’s 2022 World Cup squad.

TOP STORY – THURAM OFFERED TO BARCELONA

Marcus Thuram’s agent has offered the French forward to Barcelona as an off-season signing, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Thuram has interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Inter.

Barcelona’s economic challenges mean they have prioritised signing players on free transfers in recent times with Thuram offering that plus flexibility in attack.
