Edin Terzic is excited to test himself against Thomas Tuchel when Borussia Dortmund visit Bayern Munich for Saturday’s Klassiker, but he is not viewing the game as a Bundesliga title decider.

Dortmund sit one point clear of Bayern at the Bundesliga summit as they bid to deny the Bavarian giants an 11th successive league title.

Amid suggestions of unrest behind the scenes, Bayern opted to make a change in the dugout during the international break, replacing Julian Nagelsmann with former BVB boss Tuchel.

Ahead of welcoming Tuchel back to the Bundesliga, Terzic said competing with the former Champions League-winning coach was evidence he had himself reached the top level.

“What hasn’t changed at Bayern is that they have a top coach,” Terzic said at Friday’s press conference.

“It’s a shame with Nagelsmann because he’s an absolutely top coach, but we all know how quickly things can change.

“I’m very happy to welcome Thomas Tuchel and it shows that I work at the top level. Tuchel is not only one of the best coaches, but also one of the most successful.”

Tuchel averaged 2.09 points per game during his two-year spell in charge of Dortmund – the best figure managed by any boss in their Bundesliga history.

Dortmund are entering a Bundesliga matchday top of the table for the first time since the second week of the 2019-20 campaign, while the last time they did so during the second half of a season was when they visited Bayern in April 2019.

BVB suffered a chastening 5-0 defeat on that occasion as Bayern went on to be crowned champions, but Terzic does not believe Saturday’s game will decide the destination of the title.

“I’m firmly convinced that the championship won’t be decided in tomorrow’s game, but of course it can point the way,” he said.

“We think that we can set an example and we want to prove that we are different than we have been in recent years.

“We not only respect the task against Bayern, but also the upcoming duels. This is the hot phase of the season.”

The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be staged in the middle of the 2023-24 European campaign, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

The 2023 showpiece was due to get under way in June this year, but it was decided last July it will instead take place in 2024 to avoid hosts Ivory Coast’s rainy season.

CAF confirmed on its official website on Thursday that the delayed tournament will run from January 13 next year until February 11.

It means a number of superstar players from across Europe could potentially miss five weeks’ action for their clubs at a busy period next season.

Ivory Coast is hosting the competition for the first time since 1984 and have automatically qualified.

Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia, Burkina Faso and defending champions Senegal are the other nations to have already booked their place in the 24-team tournament.

Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final to win the most recent edition in Cameroon last year.

Xavi insisted it is not the time to talk about a potential reunion with Lionel Messi as Barcelona close in on the LaLiga title.

Having already secured the Supercopa de Espana, the club’s first silverware since Messi’s departure in 2021, Barcelona have a commanding 12-point lead in LaLiga and hold a 1-0 lead in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Madrid.

A potential treble remains on the cards for Xavi’s side, but with Messi now in the final months of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, the clamour to bring the Argentina World Cup winner back to Camp Nou is growing.

While Xavi is understandably keen to bring his former team-mate back to Barcelona, he is focused on upcoming matches and not potential transfer activity.

“I think this is not the time to talk about Messi’s return. I talk to Leo often, I have a friendship, but this is not the time,” he told reporters ahead of facing Elche.

“Neither for his sake nor for that of the club. It is a subject that is being discussed, I have a lot of contact with him.

“Hopefully, we can see him again here, I would be the first one who would be made happy. He is the best player in history, but boy, it’s not the time.

“We are a month away from winning two titles, and it’s time to focus.

“It doesn’t depend on me, it depends much more on what Leo wants to do. He’s done everything in football, he’s won everything; it depends on his happiness.

“I have a great relationship with him, and if he has the decision that he wants to come back, we will listen to him and be delighted.

“We’re going to listen to fate. Let’s see what happens, there’s nothing yet. Let’s see the will he has.

“We do a disservice to Leo, the team, the club. We are one step away from achieving success in the post-Messi era that scared us so much. This is success.”

Pressed further on Messi and next season, Xavi again sought to shift the focus towards the push for further silverware in this campaign.

“We haven’t talked about next year with the board,” he said. “We are one step away from winning titles and you talk to me about signings next year. You are specialists in changing the subject.

“On Wednesday, we can go to the Copa final. Everything is to be won.

“Sometimes I do not understand you [the media]. All year round, the talk is to win titles, and now that we are one step away, we talk about players for next season. Let’s focus on Elche.”

Barcelona are in contact with Lionel Messi and would “love” the Argentina star to make a dream return to Camp Nou, according to the club’s vice president Rafael Yuste.

Messi is in the final few months of his two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain, having joined the Ligue 1 giants when a financial crisis forced him to leave Barca in 2021.

The World Cup winner has scored 18 goals and added 17 assists this season, but with PSG falling short in the Champions League, doubts have arisen concerning his future in the French capital.

While David Beckham-owned Inter Miami are keen to take Messi to MLS, Barcelona have often been linked with a move for their all-time leading goalscorer, and Yuste refused to rule out a reunion on Friday.

“Of course we are in contact with Messi,” Yuste said on Friday. “Leo and his family know the affection I have for him, that we have them.

“I participated in the negotiations that did not come to fruition two years ago. I have that thorn stuck in me, and if we talk about La Masia, we talk about Leo.

“I would love for him to come back and I think the fans would too, because beautiful stories in life have to have a happy ending.

“We are in love with Messi and I think Messi is in love with Barca and the city of Barcelona.”

Any potential return for Messi may be dependent on Barca’s ability to cut their wage bill, with LaLiga president Javier Tebas claiming they must save €200million to meet the competition’s regulations for next season.

If the required savings can be made, Yuste believes a move for Messi is possible, adding: “Mateu [Alemany] and Jordi [Cruyff] have to present the viability and income plan to Tebas in two months.

“If all the conditions are given, we would explore that possibility. The president [Joan Laporta] was with Leo’s father recently and there is a good relationship.

“Of course, there is no attack plan because I do not want PSG to take it as that. If this happens, it will happen because destiny makes you go back to where you have to go back.

“If we could put all the conditions together and return Leo to Barcelona, it would be the perfect ending to a very happy story.”

Aston Villa boss Carla Ward has hailed Hannah Hampton following her England recall and feels Lucy Staniforth is “very unfortunate” not to have been selected.

Goalkeeper Hampton was this week included in the Lionesses squad for the Finalissima meeting with Brazil and friendly against Australia, her first involvement since last summer’s triumphant Euro 2022 campaign.

Regarding her selection, England boss Sarina Wiegman said the twice-capped 22-year-old “needed to sort out some personal issues [and] has done that”, and had produced “great performances”.

And Ward told a press conference on Friday: “I’m delighted. Since the turn of the year she’s put a lot of things in place personally which have helped her, and I think she’s developed no end in these past few months.

“Her performances, I’ve said it the last couple of weeks — there’s not a better in-form keeper in the Women’s Super League right now. That’s a fact.

“She’s absolutely flying, playing some of the best football of her career, so long may that continue.”

Hampton is one of three Villa players to make Wiegman’s 25-player selection alongside Rachel Daly and Jordan Nobbs.

Staniforth, holder of 17 caps, was most recently in the England squad last October. The midfielder joined Villa in January after leaving Manchester United, and Ward said: “She’s very unfortunate not to get called up.

“I think she has been absolutely brilliant since she’s come in.

“I wouldn’t want to comment on what Sarina is looking at but she has been absolutely brilliant for us, what a signing she has been.”

Bukayo Saka has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for the first time, scooping the prize after helping leaders Arsenal win all four of their games in the competition in March.

Saka hit three goals and added two assists in four appearances during the month as Arsenal posted wins over Everton, Bournemouth, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (33) and Tottenham’s Harry Kane (23) have been involved in more Premier League goals than Saka this season (22).

The 21-year-old – considered a candidate to be named player of the season – is the only player to reach double figures for both goals (12) and assists (10) in the competition this term.

Having helped Arsenal establish an eight-point lead over City as the Gunners chase their first league title since 2004, Saka also scored with a stunning long-range strike as England beat Ukraine 2-0 in the international break.

Saka saw off competition from Alexander Isak, Alexis Mac Allister, Tyrone Mings, Mohamed Salah and Arsenal team-mate Leandro Trossard to win the Premier League award.

He becomes the second Arsenal star to land the monthly prize this campaign, after Martin Odegaard was named the best player across November and December either side of the World Cup break.

The Premier League returns with a bang this weekend with Manchester City hosting Liverpool and top-four rivals Newcastle and Manchester United going head-to-head.

Leaders Arsenal welcome Leeds, while there are a host of clashes between teams in this season’s hotly-contested relegation battle to get stuck into.

Manchester City vs Liverpool (Saturday, 12.30pm, BT Sport)

City vs Liverpool may not be the title-deciding showdown of recent years — but it could still have a big say in who are crowned champions this term.

Pep Guardiola’s men will look to cut the gap behind Arsenal to five points, while strengthening their hopes of a top-four finish is the main aim for the sixth-placed Reds.

Despite an underwhelming campaign, the visitors have had their moments this term and are looking to complete a league double over the Citizens for just the second time in 17 seasons.

Mohamed Salah has scored in all three games against City this season in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.

Arsenal vs Leeds (Saturday, 3pm)

Arsenal’s 10-game run to claim a first Premier League title for 19 years kicks off with a home clash against relegation-threatened Leeds.

The Gunners are unbeaten in 13 meetings with Saturday’s opponents in all competitions, including a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at Elland Road in October.

But an upturn in form under Javi Gracia has bolstered hopes of survival for the Whites, having picked up two wins and a draw from their four league games with the Spaniard in charge.

Only Erling Haaland (33) and Harry Kane (23) have been involved in more goals this season than Gunners sensation Bukayo Saka (22), who also netted a stunner for England on international duty.

Bournemouth vs Fulham (Saturday, 3pm)

Struggling Bournemouth will attempt to consign top-half Fulham to a third successive defeat for the first time this season when the pair face off at the Vitality Stadium.

Since the World Cup, no team has lost more games (eight) won fewer points (eight) or scored fewer goals (seven) than the Cherries  — yet they did beat Liverpool in their last home contest.

The Cottagers have seen their superb season stumble of late, conceding six goals across successive losses — more than they had let slip in their previous 10 in the league (five).

Manor Solomon is averaging a goal every 70 minutes in the top flight this term (four goals in 278 minutes), the best rate of any player to score more than three times.

Brighton vs Brentford (Saturday, 3pm)

An intriguing clash between two sides who harbour European ambitions as Brighton host Brentford.

The shrewdly-run pair sit seventh and eighth in the table this term after sensational campaigns so far.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls have won four of their last five home games, though five of their seven losses this season have come against London sides.

Solly March is Brighton’s top scorer in 2022-23 despite all seven of his strikes coming after the World Cup, while recent England debutant Ivan Toney has netted eight times in 12 league games on the road.

Crystal Palace vs Leicester (Saturday, 3pm)

Roy Hodgson begins his second stint as Crystal Palace manager at home to Leicester, who are another side among the nine-team group embroiled in a fierce relegation scrap.

The Eagles remain without a win in 13 games in 2023, a run which led to Patrick Vieira’s sacking, while Brendan Rodgers’ men have stumbled back into danger by losing four of their last five (one draw).

After winning four straight against the Foxes between 2017 and 2019, Palace are now without a win in their last seven meetings with the East Midlanders (three draws, four defeats).

Talisman Wilfried Zaha has scored more Premier League goals against Leicester than any other side, finding the net seven times in 10 previous meetings.

Nottingham Forest vs Wolves (Saturday, 3pm)

Joining that pair in the battle against the drop are 16th-placed Nottingham Forest and Wolves, who sit in 13th with just one more point than their rivals.

Having been unbeaten in their first five games of 2023, Forest are now winless in six (two draws, four defeats), while they also saw a nine-match home run without losing end last time out against Newcastle.

Their West Midlands opponents have lost three of their most recent four, as many defeats as they had in their first nine under Julen Lopetegui.

Raul Jimenez has had more shots on target without scoring than any other Premier League player this season (nine) and has not netted in 22 top-flight games.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa (Saturday, 5.30pm, Sky Sports)

Chelsea and Aston Villa occupy 10th and 11th respectively on 38 points apiece as the pair face off in Saturday evening’s clash.

The Blues are beginning to click under Graham Potter with two wins from their last three but Unai Emery’s Villa are enjoying a four-game unbeaten run, keeping a clean sheet in each of those three wins (one draw).

It is the West Londoners who have dominated this fixture in recent years though, winning nine of their last 11 Premier League meetings.

After netting against West Ham in their last away game, Ollie Watkins can become the first Villa player to score in five successive outings on the road if he grabs one at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham vs Southampton (Sunday, 2pm, Sky Sports)

Another crucial battle at the bottom sees West Ham in 18th pitted against basement boys Southampton.

Pressure remains on David Moyes after just one win in six, while eight points picked up by the Saints in that period is not enough to lift them off the foot of the table.

The South Coast club have picked up 13 of their 23 points in games on the road (57%), the highest share of any side.

Tightening up the back will be key for both, with no team keeping fewer clean sheets this season than West Ham (five) and Southampton (four).

Newcastle vs Manchester United (Sunday, 4.30pm, Sky Sports)

A fascinating battle in the race for the top four sees Newcastle come to blows with Erik ten Hag’s United.

The pair faced off in the Carabao Cup last month, with the Red Devils taking the crown, and now meet in the top flight with just three points separating them.

Third-placed United have not lost against the Magpies in six league games, though Eddie Howe’s men have held them to a draw in their most recent two clashes.

The Toon, who are in fifth, are picking up a head of steam again after two successive wins while the visitors have failed to score in their last two games.

Everton vs Tottenham (Monday, 8pm, Sky Sports)

Christian Stellini takes charge of the first of his 10 games as interim Tottenham boss against an Everton side fighting for their lives.

The Italian will lead Spurs’ push for Champions League qualification with the club in disarray off the pitch following Antonio Conte’s departure and Fabio Paratici’s suspension, though they do currently occupy fourth.

Tottenham have lost just one of their last 20 games against the Toffees, who are currently two points above the drop zone after gaining five points from their last three outings.

England’s record goalscorer Harry Kane has 14 Premier League strikes against Everton, only netting more against Leicester (18).

Arsenal have reportedly moved ahead of Barcelona in the race to land Brazilian wonderkid Vitor Roque.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim the Gunners intensified their interest in the 18-year-old striker over the recent international break by making contact with Athletico Paranaense.

Sporting director Edu has been tracking the progress of his compatriot for some time and believes the youngster’s development can be best handled in North London.

Should he choose the Emirates as his next destination, Roque would link up with three fellow Brazilians in Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli.

Chelsea are also keen on the starlet, who has 10 goals in 40 appearances for Paranaense’s senior team, including three in four outings this term.

Yet the Blues’ recent excessive spending under Todd Boehly could make striking an agreement this summer problematic.

Finances are also an issue for Barca, who the report claims are not in a position to make big-money moves — even if the Camp Nou is reportedly Roque’s preferred destination.

One potential solution the Spaniards are exploring is a pre-agreement, which would see Roque remain in Brazil for another season ahead of a permanent switch to Catalonia in the summer of 2024.

Blessed with immense pace and strength, Roque’s six goals in eight appearances for his nation’s Under-20s this year have only increased his burgeoning reputation further.

Manchester United are considering Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani and Atalanta ace Rasmus Hojlund as potential alternatives to Harry Kane, say the Manchester Evening News.

Football Insider report Brighton are lining up a new contract for their young striker Evan Ferguson in order to ward off interest from the likes of Tottenham.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have lodged opening bids for Hajduk Split’s 16-year-old Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic, according to 90min.

A baptism of fire lies in store for Thomas Tuchel, who faces a crucial Klassiker clash with Borussia Dortmund in his first game as Bayern Munich boss.

BVB hold a one-point advantage over Bayern at the Bundesliga’s summit, while third-placed Union Berlin can close in on the top two by beating bottom side Stuttgart.

Elsewhere, Freiburg will be hoping to boost their chances of Champions League qualification against Hertha Berlin, knowing RB Leipzig could leapfrog them with a victory over Mainz.

At the other end of the table, Schalke have started to find some form and could lift themselves out of the drop zone by taking three points off Bayer Leverkusen.

Game of the weekend: Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 5.30pm)

Bayern and Dortmund are locked in a titanic tussle for the Bundesliga title.

Victory for either side could prove to be a defining moment in that race, particularly if Edin Terzic’s men are able to triumph — extending their lead at the top to four points.

The visitors will have to put an end to their miserable run of eight consecutive league defeats at Bayern, however, which is the second-longest such streak in their history.

To do so, they will rely on the attacking talents of captain Marco Reus, who has scored more league goals against the Bavarian giants (eight) than any other active Bundesliga player.

Union Berlin vs Stuttgart (Saturday, 2.30pm)

With first and second playing each other, third-placed Union’s clash with struggling Stuttgart hands Die Eisernen a golden opportunity to move closer to the teams above them.

Union are the Bundesliga’s second-most in-form side since the turn of the year, collecting 21 points so far. Stuttgart, meanwhile, have earned the second-fewest in 2023, accruing just six.

Additionally, the capital club have not lost any of their last 18 home league games (12 wins, six draws), while the visitors are winless in their previous 22 on the road in the competition (10 draws, 12 defeats).

However, there is a glimmer of hope for the Swabians as manager Bruno Labbadia — set to take charge of his 100th league game at the club — has won each of his previous two top-flight meetings with Union.

Freiburg vs Hertha Berlin (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Freiburg face Hertha Berlin knowing that only a win will ensure that they remain in the top four by the end of Matchday 26.

Thankfully for the hosts, they have not lost any of their last nine home league meetings with the Old Lady, winning each of the previous four.

Furthermore, the Breisgau Brazilians are on an 11-game unbeaten Bundesliga run at home (eight wins, three draws) and should fancy their chances of extending that record against Sandro Schwarz’s outfit, who have lost each of their last eight on the road in the competition.

Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan will be hoping to continue his current hot streak, having already registered seven top-flight goal involvements this term (four goals, three assists) — as well as netting in his most recent two league outings.

RB Leipzig vs Mainz (Saturday, 2.30pm)

RB Leipzig are intent on moving back into the top four but must overcome a solid Mainz side in order to do so.

Bo Svensson’s team come into this fixture in good form, having gone unbeaten in their last six league outings (four wins, two draws).

However, Leipzig’s recent home record is superb, losing just one of their previous 13 in the competition on their own patch (10 wins, two draws).

Additionally, Timo Werner has netted a whopping 13 goals in just 14 Bundesliga appearances against Mainz — more than he has managed against any other club.

Schalke vs Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Schalke are second-bottom but appear to have turned a corner, following eight league matches without defeat (two wins, six draws).

They also boast the division’s best defence in the second half of the season, conceding just four times from an expected goals against (xGA) tally of 8.5 — the lowest in the competition in that timeframe.

However, the hosts must contend with a desperately poor record against their next opponents Bayer Leverkusen. They have failed to win any of their previous seven league encounters (two draws, five defeats), losing each of the last three.

Furthermore, Xabi Alonso’s men toppled reigning champions Bayern last time out to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games (six wins, one draw).

The weekend’s other games

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bochum (Friday, 7.30pm

Wolfsburg vs Augsburg (Saturday, 2.30pm

It is top versus bottom in LaLiga as runaway leaders Barcelona travel to an Elche side propping up the table.

Real Madrid know they must embark on a consistent run of victories to have even the slimmest hope of catching their rivals, starting with the visit of Real Valladolid.

Elsewhere, four European contenders are in action against one another, with Atletico Madrid taking on Real Betis and Real Sociedad heading to Villarreal.

And Valencia’s struggle to avoid the drop continues as they host Rayo Vallecano on Monday evening.

Game of the weekend: Elche vs Barcelona (Saturday, 8pm)

Elche and Barcelona go into this fixture sitting at opposite ends of the division.

Their head-to-head record suggests this is likely to be a one-sided affair — the hosts have failed to win any of their last 20 LaLiga meetings with the Catalan giants (four draws, 16 defeats).

Additionally, Xavi’s men have been impeccable away from home, winning 11 of their previous 13 league games on the road (two defeats).

The Blaugrana have scored in 12 of those 13 away matches and will feel confident of adding to that tally through talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski, who netted twice in the reverse fixture — a 3-0 win for the leaders.

Real Madrid vs Real Valladolid (Sunday, 3.15pm)

Real’s chances of retaining their LaLiga title are rapidly fading, so they will hope that a victory over Real Valladolid can spark a positive run of form.

History is on Los Blancos’ side in this fixture — they have scored in all but one of their 45 home top-flight games against Sunday’s opponents, netting 113 times in the process.

Carlo Ancelotti will hope Karim Benzema is among the goalscorers if his side maintain that positive record, with the Frenchman scoring just twice in his last six league outings — a slump by his lofty standards, given his record was nine in nine before that.

The hosts’ breakthrough may come late in the day at the Bernabeu, given Valladolid have conceded the joint-most goals of any LaLiga side in the last 15 minutes of matches (14).

Atletico Madrid vs Real Betis (Sunday, 8pm)

Atleti have turned their season around in recent weeks and go into Matchday 27 just five points behind second-placed rivals Real Madrid.

Their opponents are top four-chasing Betis, who themselves are only three points outside the Champions League spots.

Diego Simeone’s record against Los Verdiblancos is excellent, with Atleti losing just once in 20 league meetings with their upcoming opponents under his stewardship (15 wins, four draws).

However, Betis striker Borja Iglesias has scored 12 LaLiga goals this term, winning 15 points for his side in the process — more than any other player in the division. He will hope to be the catalyst for an away victory on Sunday.

Villarreal vs Real Sociedad (Sunday, 5.30pm)

Villarreal and Sociedad both have designs on a European berth and their meeting at Estadio de la Ceramica should be an entertaining affair.

Quique Setien’s hosts are in good form, with three wins and one draw in their last four league outings. In contrast, La Real have recorded just one victory in their previous seven in all competitions (four draws, two defeats).

However, the Yellow Submarine have been wasteful in the final third this term, netting 32 times from an expected goals tally of 37.5 — the second-greatest margin of underperformance in the division.

And Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil has yet to lose away at Villarreal in LaLiga, winning two and drawing one of his three visits in the competition.

Valencia vs Rayo Vallecano (Monday, 8pm)

Valencia go into this weekend in the bottom three and will be desperate to claw their way up the table as Vallecano visit the Mestalla.

Andoni Iraola’s men have slipped away from the European places of late, failing to win any of their last six matches (four draws, two defeats) — the longest active winless streak in the competition.

The hosts, meanwhile, have won their previous two league outings on their own patch, keeping a clean sheet in both.

Los Che manager Ruben Baraja will expect a greater contribution from veteran striker Edinson Cavani, who has failed to score in any of his last seven LaLiga appearances after netting five times in his first eight games.

The weekend’s other games

Mallorca vs Osasuna (Friday, 8pm

Girona vs Espanyol (Saturday, 1pm

Athletic Bilbao vs Getafe (Saturday, 3.15pm
