Douglas Luiz made another vital contribution to Aston Villa’s surprise push for European football by scoring a late equaliser at Brentford last Saturday.

The Brazilian’s 87th-minute finish from close range secured a 1-1 draw against the Bees to extend Villa’s unbeaten run to nine games.

Luiz has been a constant presence during Unai Emery’s spectacular reign as manager so far and is poised for another key role at home to Fulham this evening.

Ahead of that showdown, we turn the spotlight on Villa’s midfield maestro.

Stark contrast

Despite constant links to title-chasing Arsenal, Luiz began the season out of Villa’s XI under Steven Gerrard.

John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey were Gerrard’s preferred choices in advanced midfield, with summer signing Boubacar Kamara selected in the deeper No6 role.

Luiz’s contract reaching expiry, links to an elite club and regular substitute appearances all pointed towards a departure from the West Midlands.

He quickly won his place back under Gerrard but his return to the fold could not prevent the former Rangers manager’s sacking at the end of October following a dismal 3-0 defeat at tonight’s opponents Fulham.

The difference in fortunes from that sorry night at Craven Cottage, during which Luiz was shown a straight red card, to now could hardly be more stark as the two teams face off again.

Suitable system

The Villans have won 12 of their 19 league games since Emery was appointed as Gerrard’s successor and Luiz has marshalled the midfield expertly throughout.

The Spanish tactician’s 4-2-2-2 formation, which sees the Rio de Janeiro native operate in a double midfield pivot, looks to suit him down to the ground as evidenced by his consistent displays on the pitch.

Luiz had been developing a promising partnership with Kamara in the centre of the park, with the assured pair able to take the ball in dangerous positions and allow Villa to control games.

With the former Marseille man struggling with injury, McGinn and, more recently, Leander Dendoncker have stepped in to that position without disrupting Villa’s progress.

While much of that is down to Emery’s system, keeping the dependable Luiz fit and available throughout that period will certainly have helped.

Goal threat

Luiz’s contributions of goals and assists are another notable positive.

Handed the freedom to roam forward, the ex-Manchester City prospect has five goals and as many assists in all competitions.

His ability to score from corners has been his party trick, extraordinarily doing so in games against Bolton in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal in the Premier League.

But his three other league strikes have all come as a result of being inside the box.

That extra creative license has also allowed his wicked delivery and vision to translate into assists on a regular basis, too.

Daring to dream

Saturday’s draw was further evidence of Luiz’s importance to Villa, popping up with another crucial moment in a game that saw red-hot striker Ollie Watkins struggle to have an impact.

His manager knows that the better their in-form midfielder gets, the more chance Villa have of a top-six finish.

The 51-year-old said of Luiz ahead of tonight’s clash at Villa Park: “He is taking responsibility on the pitch like I want.

“We are being demanding of him to do more because he can and he can take steps ahead.

“His qualities are very important for the idea I want to create in this team. I want to get the best of him for us.”

Luiz was once signed by Pep Guardiola and targeted by Mikel Arteta. He is now showing why that is on a consistent basis for Europe-chasing Villa.

Title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal clash on Wednesday in a hugely-anticipated fixture that could determine the destiny of the Premier League crown.

The Gunners head to the Etihad Stadium with a five-point advantage at the top of the table but champions City, with two games in hand, are also in control of their own fate.

Read on as we look at some talking points ahead of the game.

Can Arsenal halt the City charge?

Arsenal have led the way for most of the season but it is City who now have the momentum.

The Londoners’ advantage has been eroded after three successive draws while City have hit form.

Pep Guardiola’s Treble-chasing side have won 11 of their past 12 games, putting their inconsistency of earlier in the season firmly behind them.

Victory on Wednesday would undoubtedly give City the upper hand and, with all their experience of finishing seasons strongly, the signs could be ominous for Arsenal.

It does seem that Mikel Arteta’s men will need to win to have any hope of realising their dream.

No sign of City fatigue

With City chasing glory in three competitions and the fixtures mounting up, Arsenal may have been hoping they would be feeling the strain.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, there are few signs of it.

Guardiola did cite tiredness as he made six changes for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United.

But such was the ease of their 3-0 victory, with Riyad Mahrez coming into the side to score a hat-trick, it was clear there are no serious issues there. Nor does the pressure seem to be bothering them.

Arsenal, by contrast, are facing this situation for the first time and, even without the distraction of other competitions, they seem to be in need of a lift.

Injury problems

City have a doubt over the in-form Nathan Ake but, after Phil Foden’s return at Wembley, they otherwise have a clean bill of health.

In fact, from what could have been a difficult season with more World Cup call-ups than any other side, the champions have come through this campaign relatively unscathed so far.

Arsenal have had to deal with some significant injuries to key players and the absence of William Saliba has been felt acutely.

The defence has not been as solid without him over the past few weeks and boss Mikel Arteta will be anxious for his return.

Potential headline makers

There are a number of potentially interesting stories waiting to be written.

Most of City’s headlines this season have been generated by the remarkable Erling Haaland and the prolific Norwegian stands on the brink of another couple of milestones.

Two more goals would not only see Haaland, 22, equal the Premier League record of 34 goals in a season but also bring his overall tally for the campaign to 50.

Key Arsenal stars Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who were both let go by City last summer, will have the chance to upset their former team-mates.

Talking tactics

Guardiola regularly heaps praise on his former assistant Arteta but the latter has struggled to get the better of his old boss.

The pair have met eight times as managers with Guardiola winning seven.

Two of his successes have come this season, with City beating Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup at the Etihad in January and following up with a 3-1 Premier League win at the Emirates Stadium a few weeks later.

Arteta’s only victory came in an FA Cup semi-finals three years ago.

Roy Hodgson claims Crystal Palace remain in a relegation dogfight but the task facing them is not as overwhelming after picking up 10 points from their last four games.

Palace won their first three matches under Hodgson following a winless run of 12 games with former boss Patrick Vieira at the helm.

Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Everton extended the run to leave Hodgson’s men nine points clear of the drop zone.

The Eagles are still without Wilfried Zaha due to a groin injury and their star man will miss out again tonight at Wolves.

Hodgson, 75, said: “I think the size of the dog we’re fighting might have got slightly smaller.

“It’s still a fight, there’s no doubt about that. The dog is nowhere near as small as we’d like it to be.

“I’m not going to go as far as talking about mathematically safe. I still think any team on 37 points that sits back and thinks it’s job done is making a huge mistake.

“It would be an incredible lack of ambition and professionalism and desire to have six games in front of you and decide that 37 points will see us through.

“I came here in the hope I would leave the club in the Premier League. If it so happens that we are there on 37 points and goal difference, so be it.

“That’s something I don’t contemplate at the moment. I think in those six games we’re capable of taking more points and getting ourselves fighting even smaller dogs.”

Asked whether Zaha would walk back into the team, Hodgson added: “The honest answer is that when Wilf is fit, he will play.

“I still think one is always going to be dependent on one’s best players, on one’s match-winning player.

“But to become a really good team you need more than one.”

Palace can leapfrog Chelsea into 11th with victory at Molineux, something which seemed unthinkable when Hodgson returned on March 21.

At the stage, the gap to the Blues stood at 11 points but Palace are now just two points behind.

Manchester United are ready to ramp up their efforts to sign Tottenham talisman Harry Kane

The Telegraph claim the Red Devils are planning to make a bid for the England skipper, who is entering the final year of his deal and is unlikely to sign a new one.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will now be faced with the decision of whether to sell the club’s prized asset or allow him to leave for free when his contract expires at the end of next season.

United know they cannot afford a transfer saga and risk missing out on other targets — such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen — so want to get their business done early.

It has been suggested Spurs would be willing to listen to offers in the region of £80million from overseas for Kane, 29, but will demand at least £100m from fellow Premier League clubs.

A report in The Sun indicates United are willing to offer the striker a whopping £300,000-per-week contract to lure him to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are confident of landing Kane if Spurs finish outside the top four and that is now looking increasingly likely after Sunday’s 6-1 humiliation at Newcastle.

Spurs host fourth-placed United on Thursday sitting six points adrift of them in the race for the final Champions League spot.

In other news

Crystal Palace have offered Wilfried Zaha a £200,000-per-week deal, according to The Guardian.

The Eagles talisman, 30, is also being tracked by Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

GOAL indicate Inter Milan have slapped a £35m price tag on goalkeeper Andre Onana, 27, who has attracted interest from Chelsea.

Borussia Dortmund are keen on Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, report Sky Germany

The England midfielder, 23, is said to be valued at £50m by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

Michael Carrick felt Luton’s match-winning penalty should not have been given as Middlesbrough lost 2-1 to their play-off rivals at Kenilworth Road last night.

The visitors took a first-half lead through Cameron Archer but the Hatters hit back after the break, with Tom Lockyer heading in and then Carlton Morris converting after being brought down by Zack Steffen.

Yet Carrick claimed the spot-kick should not have been awarded by referee Graham Scott.

The Boro boss, 41, said: “A penalty like that, luckily we can laugh it off in some ways.

“But I do wonder, with the referees being in the Premier League and used to VAR and then not having it, I think it gives them a bit of insurance.

“This is not directly to the referee tonight, it’s something in general to look at.

“Tonight didn’t count for too much in the end but it could be a crucial decision at some point.

“Whether it’s this season or next, it’s very different for referees coming down when you haven’t got the security for the big, big decisions.

“I’m not moaning about tonight, it is what it is.

“It was never a penalty, of course it wasn’t, but it’s something to think about moving forward.”

After Matt Crooks fired over the top in the first half, the midfielder’s pass released Archer on 40 minutes, who beat the tame efforts of home keeper Ethan Horvath and walked the ball into the net.

Luton were level four minutes after the interval when Lockyer headed home Alfie Doughty’s corner.

Morris scored his controversial penalty midway through the second half and although Boro pressed for a leveller, the hosts dug in to see the victory out.

On the penalty, Hatters boss Rob Edwards said: “There’s some contact there on Carlton.

“We’ve watched it back a few times, you need a certain angle, there is contact so he’s gone down.

“If I was in their position, you’d be disappointed. But from the angle I’ve seen, there’s contact, he’s gone down, penalty.”

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is seemingly a fitness concern for the final weeks of the season after being photographed with a protective boot and crutches.

Fernandes suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final penalties win over Brighton and Hove Albion, appearing to twist his foot awkwardly in the turf.

Although he was able to continue until his eventual withdrawal in extra time, Fernandes was seen limping on the touchline before full-time and during the shoot-out.

Now it would appear the damage he sustained was more significant than first thought, with the 28-year-old’s wife posting a photo to Twitter on Monday showing him sitting on a sofa wearing a protective boot and having crutches within reach.

As such, it seems extremely unlikely he will be able to feature for United when they go to Tottenham on Thursday. They host Aston Villa three days later.

United have not provided any official updates about Fernandes’ condition or availability, with Erik ten Hag not due to face the media until Wednesday.

Fernandes has been one of United’s most reliable performers this season, with the Portugal international clearly considered key by Ten Hag given his 4,363 minutes played is over 600 more than any other outfield player in the squad.

He also leads United for chances created (146 – Christian Eriksen is second with 61), assists (11) and expected assists (14.4) – for the latter metric, Marcus Rashford is second with just 5.2.

Fernandes (21) is also one of just two United players to tally more than 11 goal involvements, with Rashford leading the way on 36.

United were last without Fernandes on Thursday, with the Red Devils losing 3-0 to Sevilla and suffering Europa League elimination in his absence.

Carlton Morris’s 20th goal of the season completed Luton’s comeback as they kept their momentum going with a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough.

The Hatters, unbeaten since mid-February, were a place above Boro in third going into the game and the winners knew that victory would keep alive their slim hopes of going up automatically to the Premier League.

It had looked like it would be the visitors after a dominant opening 45 minutes. They led through Cameron Archer, only for Town to fight back, strikes from Tom Lockyer and Morris’s penalty, claiming all three points.

The visitors began impressively, Marc Bola firing well over the top from 25 yards.

Luton forward Elijah Adebayo tested Boro keeper Zack Steffen, the Man City loanee easily claiming his left-footed drive.

Home stopper Ethan Horvath was out well at the feet of Archer, while Michael Carrick’s side should have at least tested the USA international on 20 minutes, Isaiah Jones in acres of space on the right and picking out Matt Crooks who side-footed over the top.

Boro took the lead five minutes before half-time with Archer racing on to Crooks’ pass over the top and beating the attempt of Horvath to clear, the keeper completely missing his kick and allowing the forward to take it round Sonny Bradley and walk the ball into the net.

Luton came out for the second half a different side though and after forcing two quick corners they were level from the second just four minutes in, Alfie Doughty’s set-piece met by Lockyer who guided his header in via the the post.
Boro might have led again after 55 minutes, Ryan Giles getting away on the left and his cross slammed wide by Crooks from 10 yards out.

Doughty sent an ambitious volley way over from the angle of the penalty area, but Town completed the turnaround after 67 minutes when sub Jordan Clark picked up a ball and sent Morris away.

His first touch was not the greatest but he still got there ahead of Steffen who clipped him for a spot-kick.

It was Morris who assumed the responsibility, tucking away confidently into the bottom corner.

Boro were not out of it as the dangerous Giles got away on the left and his cross was put wide by a stretching Bola.

Luton then brought on teenager Joe Johnson for his Championship debut for the final seven minutes and they managed to see out five minutes of stoppage time for victory.

Barcelona have finally secured funding to regenerate Camp Nou and the surrounding areas.

The club initially announced renovation plans in 2014, but a host of problems since have meant only a small part of the work has taken place.

The project now looks set to accelerate quickly upon the completion of the season, however, with Barca confirming on Monday that 20 investors have made €1.45billion available.

Barca assured concerned fans that “club assets were not used as a guarantee and a mortgage wasn’t taken out on the stadium”, with repayments set to be made in instalments paid at five, seven, nine, 20, and 24 years “with a flexible structure”.

“This operation once again confirms the club’s credibility regarding the Spotify Camp Nou project, the epicentre for Espai Barca,” a statement added.

“The project is essential when it comes to keeping Barcelona at the forefront of world sport, is one of the foundations for the club’s economic recovery and future viability and is a tool to enable continuation of the governance model, whereby the over 146,000 Club members are its owners.

“In the coming days the club will hold a press conference regarding the details of the operation.”

While Barca will play out the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign at Camp Nou, it had already been confirmed they are to move to the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic for next season.

Barca reportedly hope to be back at Camp Nou in late 2024.

FIFA has received four expressions of interest in hosting the 2027 Women’s World Cup, including a joint bid from the United States and Mexico.

Brazil and South Africa have also submitted expressions of interest alongside another joint bid from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with the hosts set to be appointed next May.

USA hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003 – winning the former edition – while Germany are the only other potential host to have previously staged the competition, doing so in 2011.

The US and Mexico – alongside Canada – are already set to host the next edition of the men’s World Cup in 2026.

Federations hoping to host the tournament now have until May 19 to confirm their involvement in the bidding process.

FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura said: “We are thrilled by the expressions of interest received, not least because they come from member associations with a strong football tradition representing four confederations, thus confirming the consistent popularity of women’s football across the world.

“All member associations can rely on the most robust and comprehensive bidding process in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

The 2023 edition of the tournament – taking place in Australia and New Zealand – will kick off on July 20, with the Matildas facing the Republic of Ireland and their co-hosts taking on Norway on the opening day.

– Sheffield United have won six of their last seven home fixtures
– West Brom have tasted defeat on six of their last nine road trips
– Recommended bet: Sheffield United to win

Sheffield United’s FA Cup adventure came to an end on Saturday with a respectable 3-0 loss to Manchester City but their top priority is the Championship promotion race and they have a chance to seal the deal when taking on top-six hopefuls West Brom at Bramall Lane.

The Blades are not showing any signs of nerves and came on strong in the second half of last Tuesday’s 1-0 success at home to Bristol City to take them to the brink of a top flight return.

West Brom’s promotion push has been more of a grind and it appears to be running out of steam.

Albion suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to play-off rivals Sunderland on Sunday and they might have to win all of their three remaining matches to ensure an extended season.

Sheffield United vs West Brom (Wednesday, 8pm)

Team news

The Blades welcome back City loanees Tommy Doyle and James McAtee, who were ineligible to face their parent club at Wembley.

Rhys Norrington-Davies, Rhian Brewster, Ben Osborn and Enda Stevens remain on the injured list.

West Brom continue to be severely restricted by injuries with Kean Bryan, Grady Diangana, Matt Phillips, Nathanial Chalobah, Dara O’Shea, Daryl Dike and Adam Reach ruled out.

The stats

The Blades have got the second best home record in the Championship and will be bidding for a fifth successive Bramall Lane success.

The Steel City outfit have been relying on a solid defence with five of their last seven league wins secured by a 1-0 scoreline.

Albion have won their last two away fixtures and have found the net in five consecutive games.

However, they have been beaten on each of their last two visits to Bramall Lane.

Prediction

It has been a superb season for the Blades, who moved into the top two before the World Cup with a 1-0 win at Cardiff and have stayed there ever since.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom may have to be mindful of one or two tired legs after Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final reverse but he can freshen things up with the inclusions of Doyle and McAtee and his team should benefit from the energy and encouragement imparted by an expectant home crowd.

United have already overcome the Baggies once this season – winning 2-0 at the Hawthorns in October – and should complete the double against an opponent struggling to get to grips with a lengthy injury list.

Albion will be without seven senior players, including influential attackers Phillips, Diangana and Dike, and central defender O’Shea, who has been sorely missed in recent weeks.

There has been a general expectation that Albion would eventually force their way into the top six but they fluffed their lines at the weekend and are unlikely to fare any better against the Blades.
