New deal for Laca?
Mikel Arteta believes Alexandre Lacazette is pushing for a new Arsenal deal.
The French striker’s contract expires at the end of the season and it was widely expected he would leave as a free agent this summer.
But Arteta is convinced Lacazette, 30, is displaying the attitude of a player looking to extend his stay at the Emirates.
Speaking after last night’s 2-1 win over Wolves, in which Lacazette’s last-gasp effort was turned into his own net by Jose Sa, the Gunners boss said: “We don’t know what is going to happen at the end of the season.
“There’s nothing to tell him but to praise him, because every single day he behaves like someone that wants to stay with us.”
New venue for final
UEFA have moved this season’s Champions League final from St Petersburg to Paris after Russia invaded Ukraine.
In response to the major military assault, a host of countries have hit Vladimir Putin’s nation with a range of sanctions.
And UEFA decided there was no way the European football showpiece could be staged on Russian soil on May 28 during an emergency meeting this morning.
Bielsa will battle on
Marcelo Bielsa has vowed to battle on as Leeds boss.
Bielsa’s men are just three points clear of the Premier League drop zone having been thrashed 6-0 at Liverpool earlier this week.
But the Argentine, 66, has no intention of throwing in the towel. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s lunchtime clash with Tottenham, he said: “I daily try to resolve it.
“In the most difficult situation, I reiterate, when you are the conductor in a bad situation nobody trusts in what you are saying.
“What I am sure of is if I stop doing what I believe in the situation will get even worse. What I will try is to do what we do but better.
“I never presume of fortitude. What I have clear is the more adverse the situation is, the more I fortify myself to face it.”
Howe would love to see Eriksen play
Eddie Howe cannot wait to see Christian Eriksen make his debut for Brentford.
Howe takes his Newcastle side to the Brentford Community Stadium tomorrow knowing both sides need maximum points as they battle to secure their Premier League status.
And Eriksen, who joined the Bees as a free agent last month after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer, could be in line to feature for the hosts.
Howe said: “I was watching the game where he collapsed and my thoughts and prayers were with him and his family hoping that he made a healthy recovery from that really tough situation.
“It would be great to see him back on a football pitch. From our side, during the game, we can have no emotion towards that, we all have to concentrate on our jobs.
“But certainly it’s great to see him fit and healthy and enjoying his football again.”
