Cucho Hernandez’s brace helped Watford claim a valuable 2-1 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium to boost their survival hopes, moving to within goal difference of safety.
The Hornets were gifted the opener as Mohamed Salisu’s pass back to Fraser Forster was picked off by Hernandez, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home from a tight angle in the 14th minute.
Hernandez grabbed his, and Watford’s, second 20 minutes later, arriving unmarked to turn Juraj Kucka’s left-wing cross in at the back post.
Mohamed Elyounoussi halved the deficit just before the break, however, ghosting in to direct Che Adams’ flick-on into the bottom corner after James Ward-Prowse had delivered a free-kick into the area.
