Blues believe they can Mount a comeback at the Bernabeu

Mason Mount admits Chelsea have a mountain to climb against Real Madrid next week — but the midfielder refuses to rule out a famous Chelsea comeback.

The Blues were downed by a Karim Benzema masterclass last night as the in-form striker bagged a hat-trick to hand Real a 3-1 lead going into the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between the European powerhouses.

But Mount, 23, insists Thomas Tuchel’s men will not relinquish their grip on the trophy they won last season without a fight.

He said: “The philosophy of Chelsea is that we’re always underdogs and we can climb the mountain that seems impossible at times.

“That is what we have to do now. We have a massive game next week away at their place and hopefully we can come back and do it.”

Mount made his 150th appearance for Chelsea as the European champions were soundly beaten by Carlo Ancelotti’s side at Stamford Bridge.

The defeat came on the back of a 4-1 humbling at the hands of Brentford in the Premier League, meaning the Blues have conceded seven goals in just two games since the international break.

And while Mount is concerned by his side’s brittle defence, he remains optimistic about their chances of pulling off mission impossible at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.

He added: “This is football, anything is possible. We have to give it everything.

“We know how tough it will be. We need to regroup, attacking every game 100 per cent.

“Every game is a final now. We have a massive mountain to climb but we are Chelsea. If there is a team that can do it, it is us.

“We will give it everything as we have that hunger and desire to really accomplish something.”

Before heading to Madrid, Chelsea face Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday as they bid to consolidate their position in the top three.
