Sunderland finally sealed their return to the Championship with a 2-0 play-off final victory over Wycombe at Wembley Stadium.
The Black Cats opened the scoring inside the first 12 minutes through Elliot Embleton, who burst through midfield before unleashing a powerful drive from distance beyond David Stockdale.
Ross Stewart doubled that lead with 11 minutes of normal time remaining, guiding the ball past a wrong-footed Stockdale.
Wycombe were unable to muster a response, sending Sunderland back to the second tier after four seasons in League One.
Sunderland defender Bailey Wright revealed his delight at the result and insisted he and his teammates were going to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
He said: “We have done our talking on the pitch. Wycombe gave us a great game but we deserved it.
“To a man, everyone at the club deserves this day and we’re going to enjoy the moment.
“We knew that if we were at our best we could beat anyone. We knew what Wycombe could do but we knew we had the quality to hurt them.
“I’ve been through some difficult times at this club so we’re going to soak this up and enjoy it.”
Alex Pritchard — who assisted both goals — thanked both current manager Alex Neil and former boss Lee Johnson for their contributions in helping the team earn promotion.
He said: “Everyone goes on about the size of the club, the club has been in this league for too long now.
“We’ve had ups and downs, a big thank you to [former boss] Lee Johnson — big credit to him, and Alex the gaffer has come in.
“The fans deserve it. They’ve been incredible. Before Alex came in we were leaking goals. But we’ve been solid. He’s just made us more solid and we’re always a threat.”
