Serie A announce play-off
Italy’s football federation have announced that future Serie A title races will be decided by a play-off should the top two teams finish level on points.
The idea had been discussed among participating clubs at the FIGC’s most recent general meeting, with the majority voting to ditch the previous settlement method of head-to-head records.
It means Serie A becomes the first of Europe’s major leagues to introduce a play-off decider, with penalties in store if the two sides cannot be separated after 90 minutes.
If three teams finish level at the top, then their head-to-head records will be compared to decide which two teams compete for the title.
AC Milan won a first Scudetto in 11 years last term, finishing two points above fierce rivals Inter Milan.
