Manchester United have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentina international Lisandro Martinez for a reported £48million that could rise to £56.5m add-ons.
Martinez, 24, won two Eredivisie titles working under Old Trafford chief Erik ten Hag at the Dutch giants, having moved to Amsterdam in 2019.
The Red Devils appear to have fought off Arsenal and will hope to officially make the South American their second summer signing, following the arrival of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.
Martinez is primarily a central defender but is prized for his versatility, able to play at left-back and at the base of midfield.
United released a statement confirming their agreement with their Eredivisie counterparts over the defender.
It read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez, subject to medical, to player terms being finalised, and to UK visa requirements.”
