Always look on the Bright side of life

England centre-back Millie Bright is paying little attention to previous semi-final heartbreak ahead of tonight’s clash with Sweden at Bramall Lane.

For the fourth successive major tournament, the Lionesses have reached the final four.

Bright was part of the side who lost the World Cup semi-final in 2019 — and it is now 13 years since they won at this stage.

But the 28-year-old is confident this year will be different as they bid to reach the Euro 2022 showpiece at Wembley.

Bright said: “We’re on a new journey. The youngsters have experienced big losses with their clubs so everyone has those experiences in different ways.

“Each semi-final is different. We want to keep building our confidence.

“I think our resilience in each game is growing every time, but we will fight from start to finish.

“We remain in our own little bubble. Everybody says the pressure is on us, but we stay focused on what we need to do to stay in the games.”

Eriksson: Our toughest game

Sweden star Magdalena Eriksson is used to coming up against the likes of Bright and Fran Kirby on the pitch.

And that means the Chelsea skipper knows just how tough her nation’s clash with the hosts is going to be.

However, she feels that her team-mates are ready for the test of facing a packed Bramall Lane where the huge majority of fans will be pulling for the opposition.

Eriksson said: “It will be our toughest game so far. We’re so ready. This game is what we’ve been dreaming for and reaching the next stage. We’re going to do everything we can.

“Reaching the final, that’s all we dream of. The path there would be amazing, but of course I know a lot of the English girls and the stadium will be filled.

“Winning would be so cool, but I think it would’ve been no matter who we faced.

“[The crowd] benefits England, but it’ll be extra pressure for them to play well and we’ll go out to do everything we possibly can to make it difficult for them.”

Spurs’ new academy coaches

Jermain Defoe will re-join Tottenham as an academy coach ahead of the new season.

And, according to the Standard, Spurs will also hand Yaya Toure a permanent role at the club as they continue to restructure their coaching staff.

Toure, 39, has been working with the North Londoners on a part-time basis since December after previously holding positions at various clubs in Eastern Europe.

Defoe, also 39, is the latest in a long line of ex-players to begin their coaching career at Spurs.

Scott Parker, Ryan Mason and Ledley King have all worked there, while Simon Davies is currently head of methodology.
