Transfer Talk: Fofana next on Chelsea’s defensive wish list

Chelsea are ready to turn their attention to Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana as a move for Jules Kounde stalls.

The Blues have spent much of the past two summers trying to sign Kounde, 23, from Sevilla.

But after being outpriced in 2022, it now looks like the Frenchman could choose Barcelona over the Stamford Bridge outfit.

That comes after reported interest in Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Ake failed to bring about moves.

Chelsea are prepared for this outcome though, with the impressive Fofana, 21, next on their wanted list, according to the Mail.

Another French star, Fofana has been outstanding since moving to the King Power Stadium for £36.5million from Saint-Etienne in 2020.

Leicester were quick to tie him down to a long-term contract until 2027 despite a pre-season leg break keeping him out for much of the 2021-22 campaign.

That means Chelsea would have to part with more than the £34m they spent on Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli earlier this month.

But they may raise funds from the potential departure of Timo Werner, who they are happy to let leave.

Juventus are one of the clubs interested in the German, as are cash-rich Newcastle.

Werner, 26, has flopped in West London since his £47.5m move from RB Leipzig two years ago, netting just 10 times in 56 Premier League games.
