England star Mead wins Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament

England forward Beth Mead has been named European Championship Player of the Tournament and won the Golden Boot.

The Arsenal forward, 27, scored six times and assisted five goals for her Lionesses team-mates as they won their first international tournament, beating Germany 2-1 in the final.

Although Mead did not score in Sunday’s dramatic final win over the eight-time winners, she clinched the Golden Boot — awarded to the competition’s top scorer.

Her nearest rival for that gong, Germany’s Alexandra Popp, was also on six goals prior to the final.

But the 31-year-old was forced to pull out prior to kick-off with injury.

Mead pipped the Wolfsburg forward to the title of top scorer by dint of her five assists. Popp did not register any.

Speaking after the final, Mead said: “I can’t believe it.

“Sometimes football puts you down but bouncing back is the best way. I’m speechless, I can’t take it all in.

“I’m in shock. I’ve had a good cry with my mum and dad. I am so proud of this team, I love this team and I love this country!”
