Women’s Euro 2022 winners England made history at Wembley — and the next major tournament is just around the corner.
After coronavirus delayed the Euros by 12 months, Sarina Wiegman’s side will have the chance to become world champions next summer.
Here is everything you need to know about the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
When is the 2023 Women’s World Cup?
The 2023 Women’s World Cup will kick off on July 20 with co-hosts New Zealand and Australia both set to play their opening games on that day.
And the final will be held exactly one month later on August 20 after four weeks of scintillating action.
Where is the 2023 Women’s World Cup being played?
For the first time in the women’s game, the tournament is being held across two nations.
Both Australia and New Zealand are hosting group stage and knockout games, with Sydney’s Stadium Australia the venue for the final.
Another new ground is currently being constructed in Sydney, while Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane are also host cities.
In New Zealand, Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Dunedin are the lucky cities selected to be venues for games.
What is the format?
The tournament has been expanded from 24 teams to 32, so will follow the same format as recent editions of the men’s World Cup.
There are eight groups of four, with each side playing each other once in the group stage.
The top two from each group will progress to the knockout stages, where there will be eight round of 16 ties, four quarter-finals and two semi-finals, before the big final in Sydney on August 20.
Who has qualified?
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Sweden, Spain, France, Denmark, USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Zambia, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina.
What about England?
European Champions England have not booked their spot in next summer’s tournament yet, though it looks a mere formality.
Wiegman’s side top Group D of European qualifying having won all eight of their games so far, scoring 68 times and conceding none.
If they avoid defeat at second-placed Austria in their next game on September 3, their spot will be confirmed.
When is the draw?
The draw is scheduled to take place in Auckland on October 22 before the three winners of the inter-confederation play-offs will be known.
All 32 teams will be split into four pots based on their world rankings, apart from Australia and New Zealand who will go into Groups A and B respectively as hosts.
How can I get tickets?
There are no details as to when tickets for the tournament will go on sale, but fans can register their interest on the FIFA website to make sure they get updates.
How can I watch it?
Viewers in the UK will be able to watch games on the BBC and ITV, depending on who is showing which match.
Who are the holders?
The USA are the team to beat after lifting the trophy in each of the past two editions.
They defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in France three years ago to defend the trophy they won with a 5-2 victory over Japan in Canada back in 2015.
