Bruno: That is the standard
Bruno Fernandes called on Manchester United’s players to ensure their victory over Liverpool is not a one-off.
The Red Devils put a miserable start to the campaign behind them by beating their fiercest rivals 2-1 at Old Trafford for their first points under Erik ten Hag.
While the Portuguese midfielder, 27, was thrilled with the win, he knows it is the bare minimum required at United.
He said: “Obviously it’s a great night and a great result, something we expect from Manchester United.
“To get these three points is massive for us but now this game is done. We have to look forward and carry on this attitude, this passion and this character that we showed tonight into the next games.
“The attitude that we showed tonight, the passion that we showed, the desire to win the game — not that we didn’t show it before.
“But in the last two games we could have added something more and today was the day we showed all of that together with the quality of the players.
“Well done from everyone today, and even the ones that didn’t play — they did a great job through the week to push all the ones that played.
“That has to be the mindset for the team, that everyone is included, everyone is part of the team and even when they don’t play they have a part to play.”
United travel to Southampton on Saturday lunchtime as they try to pick up back-to-back wins.
Under-fire Lampard to make changes
Everton boss Frank Lampard is set to hand £40million signing Amadou Onana his full debut at Fleetwood tonight.
The Toffees visit the League One side in the Carabao Cup looking for their first victory of the season, with Lampard coming under pressure for the sorry start.
As well as welcoming back club captain Seamus Coleman, midfielder Onana, 21, will be handed his first chance to impress from the off at Highbury.
Lampard said: “It’s an important game. We’ve got players who are still needing minutes to get up to speed — a couple who played [against Nottingham Forest], a couple who weren’t playing that will come into the team.
“[Onana] needs minutes, so there’s a good chance [he will start].
“Seamus is in that position off the back of his injury. He was typically Seamus-like in that he’s worked brilliantly to get fit. A game will surely help him.
“It’s game we have to respect — respect the opponent and understand the importance of it and how the fans and how we should view it.”
Elsewhere in the second round, Leicester visit Stockport, Aston Villa are at Bolton and Brentford travel to Colchester.
Striker charged after drenching ref’s suit
Swindon striker Harry McKirdy is in trouble with the FA after drenching the referee’s suit following his red card in a 0-0 draw with Salford.
In one of the more bizarre FA charges announced, it has been revealed that McKirdy threw a protein shake at the wall of the official’s changing room, where it split and spilled over the clothes.
The striker, 25, was sent off for two bookable offences before half-time in the game on August 6 and has already served a one-match suspension.
But he is likely to face more severe punishment after venting his anger in both the kit room and then the ref’s room at the County Ground.
Seeing the door open and believing it was half-time, McKirdy went to confront the official but found an empty room.
It was then the incident occurred and he has been charged with breaching Rule E3 — “using aggressive and/or improper behaviour, in an incident which was outside the jurisdiction of the match officials”.
