Premier League Matchday 6: Leaders Arsenal head to Old Trafford

Manchester United’s Sunday showdown with early leaders Arsenal tops the bill on a fascinating Matchday 6 in the Premier League.

That is not the only box office viewing on offer, however, with Everton hosting Liverpool in the season’s first Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime.

Chelsea and West Ham then meet in a fiery all-London affair before Manchester City and red-hot Erling Haaland visit Aston Villa.

Then on Sunday, two of the division’s in-form sides meet at Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag’s revitalised Red Devils hoping to become the first side to take points off the impressive Gunners.

We have all 10 weekend clashes covered in detail.

Everton vs Liverpool (Saturday, 12.30pm, BT Sport)

Everton are anything but serial winners against their local rivals but do at least know how to make things difficult for the Reds at Goodison Park.

Despite being victorious in only one of the last 23 Premier League Merseyside derbies, the Toffees have drawn eight of the last 11 on their own patch.

Jurgen Klopp’s side did win 4-1 on their most recent visit though, meaning potential back-to-back away wins in the fixture for the first time since 2009.

Mohamed Salah has four derby strikes to his name but the form man is home starlet Anthony Gordon, who can become the youngest Englishman to score in three straight games for Everton since Francis Jeffers in 2000.

Brentford vs Leeds (Saturday, 3pm)

Two teams who have made encouraging starts go head to head in West London, with recent history favouring the visitors.

Leeds are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Brentford and enjoyed leaving things late last term, scoring injury-time goals in both the home and away contests.

Thomas Frank’s hosts are a tough nut to crack on their own patch though, having lost just one of their last seven such outings with an impressive five clean sheets along the way.

Ivan Toney has 49 goals for the Bees and one further effort will make him the first player to reach a half-century of strikes for the club since lower-league journeyman Clayton Donaldson in 2014.

Chelsea vs West Ham (Saturday, 3pm)

West Ham will need to overcome a rotten record at Stamford Bridge if they are to take advantage of Chelsea’s stuttering form.

The Blues’ loss to Southampton was their second defeat in five outings — only once before have they lost three of their first six in a Premier League campaign (2015-16).

Meanwhile, the Hammers were good value for their point against Tottenham but have only won of their last 16 trips to Chelsea, with 11 defeats in that run.

In further worrying news for the visitors, Thomas Tuchel has won an impressive 69% of his London derbies while David Moyes is winless in 17 career visits to Stamford Bridge as a boss.

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace (Saturday, 3pm)

Newcastle have the chance to bounce back quickly from late heartbreak at Anfield when Crystal Palace visit Tyneside.

Eddie Howe’s hosts only have six points on the board but have been impressive and are hunting for back-to-back league victories against the Eagles for the first time since 2017.

The Magpies lost late against Liverpool but now face a side even more proficient in blowing leads — Palace have been ahead in all three of their away games this term and yet have only taken one point from them.

Alexander Isak netted on debut for the Toon Army and can become only the second ever player to net in his opening two Premier League games for the club, with the first being Les Ferdinand in 1995.

Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth (Saturday, 3pm)

Two promoted sides do battle in what looks a potential crunch contest, even at this early stage of the campaign.

Both clubs have felt the wrath of the Premier League elite in recent times with Forest thumped 6-0 at the hands of  City, while a 9-0 loss to Liverpool last week spelled the end for Bournemouth boss Scott Parker.

The Cherries did at least bounce back from that with a clean sheet and point at home to Wolves on Wednesday — though they have lost 14 of their last 16 away games in the top flight.

Steve Cooper has never lost back-to-back home outings since taking charge at the City Ground but must now contain an opponent who beat them twice last term to preserve that record.

Tottenham vs Fulham (Saturday, 3pm)

History suggests that Tottenham can extend their unbeaten start to the campaign when Fulham make the short hop across the capital.

Spurs have taken a staggering 34 points from a possible 39 against the Cottagers, though it is worth noting the two occasions they dropped points both came on their own turf.

Visiting forward Aleksandar Mitrovic loves playing Tottenham having racked up three goals and two assists in his previous meetings and could score in four straight Premier League games for the first time ever.

However, home marksman Harry Kane is the man for London derbies, boasting 42 goals in such fixtures — one more strike will take him level with the all-time leader Thierry Henry.

Wolves vs Southampton (Saturday, 3pm)

Still searching for a first win, Wolves will be happy to see Southampton make the trip up to the West Midlands.

The Saints have lost their last three meetings with the men from Molineux and are winless in five, though they do arrive fresh off the back of a precious 2-1 victory over Chelsea in midweek.

For Bruno Lage, it is now 12 league games without a win stretching back into last season and perhaps more worryingly, his side have only found the net twice in five matches this term.

Home forward Raul Jimenez is having a particularly tough time in front of goal, though the Mexican does have five strikes in as many meetings with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s visitors.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City (Saturday, 5.30pm, Sky Sports Main Event)

Things go from bad to worse for struggling Villa with free-scoring City primed to pile more pressure on Steven Gerrard.

The Citizens have won 14 of their last 16 meetings with the Villans in the top flight, with their only loss in that run coming in 2013.

Arriving on a 20-game unbeaten streak away from home, City will be confident of seeing off Gerrard’s hosts, who have lost four of their opening five matches for the first time since 1997-98.

Haaland has nine goals in his first five Premier League outings and is looking to become the first player ever to net three straight hat-tricks in the competition.

Brighton vs Leicester (Sunday, 2pm, Sky Sports Main Event)

Lowly Leicester will hope to roll back the years and rediscover their previously reliable touch when facing Brighton.

Though the Seagulls took four points from last year’s two clashes, the Foxes were eight meetings unbeaten prior to that and have scored in their last five trips to the South Coast outfit.

But Brighton have made an excellent start and their three goals conceded is the lowest tally in the division — this could be the first time they start a home campaign with three clean sheets since 2015-16.

With visiting striker Jamie Vardy still goalless this season, perhaps this Sunday clash will click him into gear. The No9 has a remarkable 41 goals in 63 top-flight outings on the final day of the week.

Manchester United vs Arsenal (Sunday, 4.30pm, Sky Sports Main Event)

One side’s winning streak must end at Old Trafford as United entertain old foes and early leaders Arsenal.

Following two humbling defeats to Brighton and Brentford, Ten Hag’s Red Devils have since won three straight and have only lost one of their last 15 home games against the North Londoners.

However, this is a Gunners side protecting a 100% record and Mikel Arteta’s men can become only the fifth side ever after Newcastle, Chelsea, City and Liverpool to start a season with six straight successes.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be desperate to feature for the hosts, having netted seven goals in his last eight meetings with Arsenal including strikes in both of last season’s encounters.
