Edwards for England
Owen Hargreaves has tipped Marcus Edwards to be called up by England after the Sporting Lisbon forward’s eye-catching display against Tottenham.
The Portuguese outfit beat Spurs 2-0 in the Champions League last night thanks to late goals from Paulinho and Arthur Gomes, though many of the post-match plaudits went to another of their stars.
Enfield-born Edwards, 23, who joined Tottenham as a six-year-old before leaving in 2019, was a constant thorn in his old team’s side and nearly opened the scoring with a spectacular solo effort in the first half.
Asked whether Edwards could be in line for a Three Lions call-up, Hargreaves said on BT Sport commentary: “How can he not when he’s playing like that?
“There were loads of internationals and he was the best player on the pitch. That’s what you want as a player, an opportunity. He can play in different positions.
“He’s playing as a false nine really well and can play as a number 10. He just takes the ball so well. I think there’s always a space for a player like that in the team.”
Gareth Southgate will reveal his England squad tomorrow ahead of their Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany later this month.
Arsenal vs City moved for Feyenoord clash
Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City has been postponed to allow for the rearrangement of the Gunners’ Europa League clash with Feyenoord.
Mikel Arteta’s men were due to face the champions on Wednesday, October 19 but will now play the Eredivisie outfit 24 hours later.
Their European clash, originally scheduled for tomorrow evening, was moved due to policing issues following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Premier League say a date for Arsenal versus City will be announced in due course, but it will have to be in the new year due to the World Cup in Qatar.
Terriers sack boss
Huddersfield have sacked head coach Danny Schofield after only one win in his nine games in charge.
Schofield, 42, was appointed from within the coaching staff after Carlos Corberan resigned unexpectedly in July.
The Terriers reached the Championship play-off final under the Spaniard last term but are currently sitting second from bottom with just four points.
A statement from the club read: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Danny for his hard work and dedication and wishes him the very best for the future.”
Glenavon teenager breaks record
Northern Irish schoolboy Christopher Atherton became the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom at 13 years and 329 days when he played for Glenavon last night.
The teenager was a second-half substitute as they beat Dollingstown 6-0, even grabbing an assist for Glenavon’s sixth.
Atherton breaks a 42-year record set by Eamon Collins, who played for Blackpool aged 14 years and 323 days.
