Lionesses learnings
England head coach Sarina Wiegman has urged her Lionesses to learn from their goalless draw against Czech Republic at the Amex Stadium last night.
The European champions had been on a 15-game winning streak but were held by a Czech side ranked 28th in the world.
Their unbeaten run was extended to 24 matches, but Fran Kirby and Co were unable to breach a resolute defence on the South Coast.
And Wiegman admitted her frustration with the result, saying: “We’re absolutely disappointed because we think we could have won.
“We knew Czech [Republic] was a very tough opponent, very physical and direct, for us a very good learning moment.
“They tied the Netherlands twice in the qualification rounds, we saw how tough they were, how physical they were but I hoped we would have broken down their defence quicker.”
Postecoglou rues missed chances
Celtic saw their Champions League dream end at the hands of RB Leipzig last night despite the Scottish side having their fair share of chances.
The hosts fell to a 2-0 defeat but Matt O’Riley and Greg Taylor hit the frame of the goal in quick succession and Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and substitute Georgios Giakoumakis all missed good opportunities.
The Bhoys have scored only twice in four European matches this season and boss Ange Postecoglou believes it is the same old story for his side.
He said: “I thought we showed all the effort and endeavour to try to win a game of football but, as we have found at this level, if you don’t take your chances it’s very hard to convert all of that into a result.
“I’m trying to tell us to play in a certain way to be successful, but we know at this level that if you don’t take your opportunities then it’s going to hurt you at some stage.
“It’s been the story of our campaign so far — a lot of missed chances. I’m disappointed for our players and supporters that they haven’t had their rewards.”
The former Australia head coach will want his players to focus on the remaining two group games with the Scottish champions still in with a chance of finishing third and dropping down into the Europa League.
