Iwobi wants to inspire like uncle Okocha
Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi has said he would like to emulate the career of his uncle Jay-Jay Okocha and become a role model for youngsters.
Iwobi, 26, is finally flourishing for the Toffees after enduring a difficult start to life on Merseyside.
Under boss Frank Lampard, the Nigeria international has become more consistent and comfortable as a central midfielder having played out wide for most of his career.
And Iwobi is hoping that a bit of family magic has been passed on from his legendary uncle.
He said: “He was an entertaining player to watch, and the skills he used to do were outrageous, that you only really see freestylers do.
“Hopefully the younger viewers will learn a bit more about him and understand why I chuck in some skills too.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m just that same kid that wants to express myself and play football but when I do realise that, ‘Wow, I have an influence on kids’, it’s mad. I just want to put positive things out there for them.
“It’s nice that kids look up to me and try to imitate me and play like me because I was once that kid who used to look up to my uncle.”
Brentford to promote life-saving CPR skills
Brentford have announced that they will be raising awareness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training at their game against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
A heart-shaped CPQR code will feature prominently on the front of the Bees’ shirts for the West London derby to encourage millions watching around the world to take two minutes to learn the basics of CPR.
It comes as part of a new partnership between Brentford and a number of leading charities to improve heart health in the local community.
CPR demonstrations will also take place around the Gtech Community Stadium on the night and first-team players Mads Roerslev and Keane Lewis-Potter will feature in their own instructional video which will be published on social media.
The aim is to use the power of sport and a collective voice to change the game for cardiac health in West London.
Brentford offered Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen the chance to resume his career on a short-term deal last season after the Denmark ace suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.
Wimbledon condemn staff abuse
AFC Wimbledon have hit out at the behaviour of some fans following the club’s derby defeat to Sutton last Saturday.
The League Two side revealed club personnel were subjected to verbal and physical abuse after the Dons’ 1-0 loss at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the two since 2002 and there was an estimated crowd of around 8,500.
A club statement condemning the abuse suffered by staff read: “Saturday’s result was understandably frustrating for everyone but the game was further marred by several unacceptable incidents that AFC Wimbledon cannot — and will not — tolerate.
“Many of our loyal fans, volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to rebuild our club from scratch and facilitate our return to Plough Lane.
“They freely give their time and energy and yet some found themselves targets of vitriol and hatred as a tiny band of ‘supporters’ inexcusably turned their frustration into anger.
“Several unsavoury incidents have now been reported to us, with club staff, volunteers and Dons Trust Board members on the receiving end of verbal and even physical abuse.
“The club takes a zero-tolerance approach to verbal or physical abuse directed towards its staff and volunteers and, where possible, action will be taken against those responsible.”
