Cody Gakpo has delivered his biggest transfer hint yet by confessing he would consider a move to Manchester United.
Netherlands sensation Gakpo, 23, is now valued at over £50million after shining at the World Cup with three stunning goals in as many group-stage games.
He and his Oranje team-mates face a tantalising quarter-final tussle with Argentina tomorrow evening but discussion over the youngster’s club future has already begun.
In a revealing interview with Dutch news outlet NRC, Gakpo has spoken about his disappointment in not securing a Premier League move last summer.
As well as sharing his thoughts on a potential Old Trafford switch, the forward also opened up on a last-minute decision to turn down Leeds in August.
Gakpo said: “That was an intense period. I did learn from that. I’m going to do things differently now.
“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know any more. And I started having doubts.
“Leeds did come. Should I go there? Now I wait and see everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. If they come, I will think about it.
“In these decisions too, I seek God’s help. I ask Him what I can do best.”
It is thought Jesse Marsch’s Whites had an offer accepted for Gakpo but could not get the player to agree personal terms.
Marsch stated last month that a deal was “99.9% done” but believes the player’s World Cup performances have now taken him out of the West Yorkshire club’s price range.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for several months, with Erik ten Hag a known admirer of the PSV Eindhoven starlet.
Having already brought Tyrell Malacia and Antony to Old Trafford from the Eredivisie, the coach has proven himself a shrewd judge of talent to date and a deal looks increasingly inevitable.
