Gotta have faith
Frank Lampard is calling on Everton fans to get behind the team after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves.
The Toffees took the lead via Yerry Mina’s strike but Daniel Podence struck back and Rayan Ait-Nouri popped up with a last-gasp winner.
Everton fans booed their sixth defeat in eight Premier League games, which leaves them just a point above 18th-placed Wolves, but Lampard called for patience.
He said: “I think the lads had all the right intentions so for that I’d love the crowd to stick with them.
“We saw what a positive Goodison Park can be last year so let’s not come away from that.
“I’m in the dressing room with them and I know they want to do the right thing.
“I’m not asking the players to play 100 passes in our own final third, but to be a bit braver on the ball.
“Good players want to play so I’d like that to get some backing as the reality is we haven’t got Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] for the direct option.
“We have to take it on the chin. We are trying to improve off the back of where we last year and it will be baby steps.”
Saints in with a prayer
Southampton playmaker James Ward-Prowse believes their festive schedule presents an opportunity to climb off the foot of the table.
New boss Nathan Jones suffered defeat in his home debut as Brighton ran out comfortable 3-1 winners on Boxing Day.
But skipper Ward-Prowse, who scored the Saints’ goal, insists they can bounce back in upcoming games against Nottingham Forest and Fulham.
He said: “Of course we’re disappointed. [Our] first game after the restart and we saw it as a good opportunity to be on the front foot and give everybody something to be excited about.
“I think we failed to implement the manager’s messages and that’s disappointing.
“This time of year gives you the opportunity to turn bad results around very quickly and it’s a definitive period of the season for us.
“There’s a lot of winnable games coming up but that’s down to us and it starts on the training pitch with the work we’re going to do with the manager.”
