Erik ten Hag believes Marcel Sabitzer is the perfect choice to solve Manchester United’s midfield injury woes.

The Austrian was signed on loan from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day after it was confirmed that Christian Eriksen had joined Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay on the casualty list.

And Ten Hag is confident the new addition will be right at home in the Premier League.

The United boss said: “We needed that transfer because we have a shortage of midfield players. It was good to bring a quality player like that in on deadline day.

“I know the player already. He has a great attitude and he is in the right age, so I am sure being here will motivate him strongly.”

Sabitzer, 28, watched from the stands at Old Trafford last night as United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 to progress to the Carabao Cup final 5-0 on aggregate.

Battle to be No1

Steve Cooper will have a selection dilemma on his hands when Dean Henderson returns to fitness — but it is a problem the Nottingham Forest boss is relishing.

Henderson, 25, has impressed since moving to the City Ground on loan from Manchester United but is currently out of action with a thigh problem.

That injury prompted Forest to bring in Keylor Navas from Paris Saint-Germain until the end of the season before the transfer window slammed shut.

And Cooper is looking forward to seeing the Champions League winner, 36, working alongside Henderson in the battle to be No1.

He said: “Dean is not [out] long term. He is working very hard and when he is available we will see where he is at.

“But that is elite squad football. You need competition for places. I want that.

“It is a headache. There will always be a group of players for who I won’t be their favourite person in the world. But I would rather have that.”

After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Manchester United, Forest resume their Premier League campaign at home to Leeds on Sunday.

Stand up… if you want to

The Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle on February 26 will be the first major domestic English men’s final in almost 35 years at which some fans will be allowed to stand.

Both clubs will receive an allocation of 867 seats within new standing areas at Wembley behind each goal in the East and West stands.

Premier League and Football League teams have been permitted to introduce licensed standing since the start of the season, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City Cardiff and QPR offering standing sections for home and away supporters.

In these areas, fans are allowed to stand for matches in allocated spaces behind a barrier or rail preventing them from falling forward.
