Kevin McDonald’s second-half equaliser denied Wycombe victory in Matt Bloomfield’s first home game in charge as Exeter earned a 1-1 draw at Adams Park.
Bloomfield’s new side needed less than two minutes to take the lead, Chem Campbell taking advantage of Pierce Sweeney’s poor clearance to coolly convert his first career goal.
Demetri Mitchell spurned two chances to level inside a frantic opening quarter of an hour, diverting Harry Kite’s cross wide before being denied by Max Stryjek.
Wycombe also twice came close to doubling their advantage before half-time, Garath McCleary striking the post and later setting up an unmarked Sam Vokes, who blazed over from 10 yards out.
Archie Collins curled over early in the second half as the Grecians sought an equaliser, which arrived after 68 minutes when McDonald turned home the rebound after Sam Nombe’s shot was parried by Stryjek.
Both sides came close to a late winner, Vokes and Mitchell firing inches wide at either end before a looping Nombe header hit the top of the bar as a pulsating clash ended honours even.
