– Liverpool have won their last four Premier League games
– Six of Fulham’s last seven league games have featured less than four goals
– Recommended bet: Liverpool to win and under 3.5 goals
Resurgent Liverpool moved up to fifth place after Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 victory at home to Tottenham, and they have a great chance to inch closer to Europa League qualification when facing mid-table Fulham at Anfield.
The Reds have been scoring lots of goals in recent times and were three up inside the opening 15 minutes against Spurs.
However, the Merseysiders have demonstrated a few vulnerabilities at the back and Jurgen Klopp will be keen to witness a much more disciplined performance against the Cottagers.
Fulham have been in the hunt for European qualification for large parts of the season, but their results have dipped and they remain in 10th place after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester City.
Liverpool vs Fulham (Wednesday, 8pm)
Team news
Ibrahima Konate has been struggling to cope with two games in a week and could make way for Joel Matip at the heart of the Liverpool defence.
Stefan Bajcetic and Roberto Firmino remain unavailable but Diogo Jota could be pushing for a recall after his injury-time goal against Tottenham.
As for Fulham, Willian has shaken off a hamstring strain and should return to the squad, but Andreas Pereira, Tim Ream and Layvin Kurzawa are all injured and Aleksandar Mitrovic is suspended.
The stats
Liverpool’s four-match winning sequence is their best of the season, although they have failed to secure a shutout on each occasion.
The Reds have scored at least two goals in each of their last five matches and their unbeaten home league record stretches back nine games to October when they sustained a shock 2-1 loss at Leeds.
Fulham have tasted defeat in six of their last eight top-flight games but they remain 10th and have not been outside the top half since mid-October.
The Cottagers have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine league fixtures.
Prediction
Liverpool have fallen beneath their lofty expectations this season but they remain an extremely tough proposition on home soil and should get the better of Fulham in a fairly tight encounter.
Reds’ fans have witnessed some thrills and spills in recent weeks and were put through the mill during Sunday’s seven-goal success over Spurs.
Given that Liverpool’s Premier League goals-against tally (42) is already 16 higher than last season, it would be fair to assume that they have some defensive issues to address.
However, while they struggled to cope with Spurs duo Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, they should fare a lot better against a Fulham side weakened by the absences of Pereira and Mitrovic.
The Cottagers have lost four of their last five away fixtures, including the infamous 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Manchester United, and are likely to slide to defeat at Anfield, where they have been eclipsed on three of their last four visits.
