– West Ham look set to have key names back available
– Man Utd have lost seven times away from home in the league
– Recommended bet: West Ham to win
Both West Ham and Manchester United lost in midweek and approach Sunday’s match at the London Stadium with trepidation.
The Hammers became Manchester City’s latest victims on Wednesday, losing 3-0, but were without some key players who are expected to return here. They will be needed as a recent run of three straight defeats has seen them slip back into the relegation reckoning.
Man Utd suffered their seventh league away defeat of the season as they went down 1-0 at Brighton courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister’s 99th-minute penalty.
Their away record is sure to be a worry for Erik ten Hag and while his club have a fine record against Sunday’s hosts, key injuries look to be catching up with them.
Team news
Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Nayef Aguerd all missed the defeat to City through illness but David Moyes has confirmed that the trio have returned to fitness.
However, Kurt Zouma is again absent through the ankle injury picked up in last weekend’s defeat to Crystal Palace, while Vladimir Coufal is sidelined with the hamstring issue that forced him off at the Etihad.
Gianluca Scammaca is another player unavailable following knee surgery last month.
Lisandro Martinez (foot), Donny van de Beek (knee), Scott McTominay (knock), Raphael Varane (ankle) and Tom Heaton (ankle) are all out for the visitors.
Ten Hag should, though, have Alejandro Garnacho available. The winger has been absent since March due to an ankle injury but is ready to return.
The stats
West Ham’s defeat at City means they have now lost three Premier League games in a row. However, they had shown signs of good form before that, losing just one of their 10 matches across all competitions.
The Hammers have not beaten Man Utd in the Premier League since 2019, with the Red Devils winning the reverse fixture at Old Trafford 1-0, before also triumphing in March’s home FA Cup fifth round tie 3-1.
Sunday’s visitors have lost seven of their 17 away games in the league. They also lost 3-0 at Sevilla to be eliminated from the Europa League.
They will need to be wary of Said Benrahma, who has scored twice against them in the past, while United’s duo to watch are Anthony Martial, who has six career goals when facing West Ham, one more than Marcus Rashford.
Prediction
Despite their recent form, this looks like a fabulous opportunity for West Ham to ease their relegation fears.
Man Utd’s inconsistency on the road is a real worry and while they sit fourth in the table, have already won the Carabao Cup and are into the FA Cup final, are a team who are tough to trust, especially away from home.
With Rice, Soucek and Aguerd set to return, the Hammers can cause an upset, especially with, among others, Varane and Martinez not available for the visitors.
