Food for thought
James Maddison has taken to social media to clarify his comments over his Leicester team-mates not being “hungry enough” in yesterday’s 5-3 defeat at Fulham.
The Foxes were booed off at half-time by the travelling support at Craven Cottage when 3-0 down.
Dramatic wins for fellow strugglers Everton and Nottingham Forest mean Dean Smith’s side are back in the relegation zone with three games remaining and Maddison’s post-match interview caused a stir among the club’s fans.
The 26-year-old said: “I’m hurting. This was a big game for us and we were not at it.
“We didn’t start the game well enough. We need to do the basics well. We were not hungry enough to want to win the game.”
But in a subsequent Tweet, the England midfielder stressed that his comments did not relate to the attitude of his fellow Foxes stars.
He explained: “When I say not hungry enough, I mean aggressive and on the front foot in duels, not us wanting to win or realising the importance.”
Leicester host Liverpool next Monday before a trip to Newcastle a week later and a final-day showdown with West Ham.
Nev’s warning
Gary Neville has told Liverpool’s owners they must back Jurgen Klopp this summer.
The Reds are facing the prospect of no Champions League football for the first time in seven years next season after a disappointing Premier League campaign.
And now former Manchester United full-back Neville, 48, has stressed the need for Fenway Sports Group to provide their German boss with reinforcements.
Neville said: “Jurgen Klopp has to be supported this summer.
“He was supported a number of years ago when they fell short and pushed themselves in the transfer market. They’re going to have to go there again this summer because other teams are going to invest.
“Klopp’s strength over the last six or seven years has been in the quality of his football but also the strength of recruitment. He has been able to get the most out of players that haven’t cost stupid amounts.
“Look at those £30 or £40million signings of [Diogo] Jota, [Mohamed] Salah, [Sadio] Mane, [Andy] Robertson, they have been absolutely outstanding.
“They will have to do a bit of that, but they will also have to put down some serious money on a couple of players.”
