Burnley are in good Kompany with City legend Vincent as boss

Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany cannot wait to get started after being appointed as Burnley’s new boss.

The Belgian, 36, replaces caretaker manager Mike Jackson, who narrowly failed to keep the Clarets in the Premier League last term following the sacking of Sean Dyche.

Kompany said: “Burnley is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager. I’m excited by the challenge ahead.

“I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor.

“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club, which aligns with my own, and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

Burnley had been on the lookout for a new manager since Dyche was axed in April.

Jackson kept them in with a fighting chance of avoiding the drop until the final day of the season, when a home defeat to Newcastle condemned the Clarets to life in the Championship.

Kompany left Anderlecht by mutual consent last month after two years in charge, guiding them to a third-placed finish in the Belgian First Division A last season.

He makes his return to the Premier League after 11 years at City as a player, with eight of those spent as the club captain.

Kompany won 10 major titles during his time with the Citizens, including four Premier League triumphs.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace added: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Vincent to Burnley.

“He is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the club back to the Premier League.

“Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium’s biggest teams back to European football and a cup final last season and we’ve been excited by his philosophy, approach and ambition for the club.”

Kompany is set to oversee a summer of change at Turf Moor.

The Clarets recently confirmed the release of 14 players, including first-team regulars James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Erik Pieters.
