The first bit of club action after the World Cup came in the Carabao Cup as 16 teams became eight and the draw for the quarter-final was conducted after Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-2 to knock the holders out.
Pep Guardiola’s side will now have to travel down to Southampton, while Manchester United host League One strugglers Charlton.
The other two ties are all Premier League fixtures — Nottingham Forest will travel to Wolves and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle will host Leicester.
Even before the most recent round, some of the best teams in the country crashed out with Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea all making early exits.
