An “embarrassed” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer accepted that “something is wrong” at Manchester United after their heavy defeat at Watford.
The Red Devils were thrashed 4-1 on Saturday at Vicarage Road by a Watford side who had not won at home in the Premier League since the opening day of the season.
Josh King and Ismaila Sarr put the Hornets ahead at the break after David de Gea had saved a penalty, and although Donny van de Beek reduced the deficit, Harry Maguire’s red card left United facing an uphill task.
Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis scored in injury time to complete the rout as United suffered a fifth defeat in seven matches in the top flight to leave them six points outside the top four.
They have taken just four points from their previous seven games, which is their worst such run since December 2001, while this was their heaviest defeat to a promoted side in the Premier League era.
Solskjaer survived the 5-0 hammering by Liverpool and 2-0 home loss to Manchester City but described feeling “very” low after their latest setback.
He also said he understood the frustration of the fans, many of whom vented their anger at the Norwegian as he held up his hands to them after full-time.
“It’s a definite big, big challenge for everyone at the club,” he told Sky Sports. “The results are not good enough, we know that. Of course, something is wrong.
“I feel for the fans. I feel the same as them. We’re embarrassed, losing the way we do. We’re in a very bad run, a bad situation, but that’s part of football and I know they’ll support the team and whoever’s on the pitch every single day.
“That was a sorry for the performance.”
Asked what the result meant for his future, Solskjaer said: “I am working for and with the club. Of course, we have a good communication, and if the club are thinking of doing something that is a conversation between us.
“It’s not for me to worry about. I work as hard as I can, as well as I can with the staff I have, incredible staff, top people, good professional players.
“But, at the moment, we’re not getting results, so I understand your question. I’m not going to discuss that with you, here and now.”
