FA Cup round-up: Kidderminster and Plymouth push West Ham and Chelsea all the way

The FA Cup fourth round came close to producing a number of giant-killings, but the Premier League sides forced extra time on each occasion to avoid embarrassing exits.

Three all-Premier League ties saw Wolves, Brentford and Brighton knocked out of the competition, while three Championship teams made it to the fifth round.

Kidderminster Harriers 1-2 West Ham (AET)

Sixth-tier Kidderminster took a shock first-half lead to stun Premier League West Ham, with Alex Penny converting after Alphonse Areola came off his line but failed to deal with a free-kick delivered into the middle.

The non-league outfit came within a whisker of knocking their top-flight opponents out in regular time, but Declan Rice rifled in a stoppage-time leveller to force extra time.

The game looked to be heading for penalties, but Jarrod Bowen arrived at the back post in the 121st minute to put the Hammers through.

Chelsea 2-1 Plymouth Argyle (AET)

Defender Macaulay Gillesphey headed home from a free-kick in the eighth minute to give League One Plymouth a shock lead at Stamford Bridge.

Cesar Azpilicueta produced a cheeky finish to level the scores before the break, however, and the game was forced into extra time.

Marcos Alonso popped up in the box to net the winner for Chelsea, with Kepa Arrizabalaga saving Ryan Hardie’s spot-kick to ensure the match did not go to a penalty shootout.

Wolves 0-1 Norwich

Kenny McLean’s goal on the brink of half-time saw Norwich knock Wolves out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Molineux.

A wide free-kick was delivered into the middle and the Canaries midfielder looped a header past John Ruddy.

The Premier League relegation strugglers have now won three games on the bounce in all competitions with their victory over Bruno Lage’s men.

Manchester City 4-1 Fulham

Manchester City came from behind to secure a comfortable FA Cup fourth-round victory over Championship leaders Fulham.

Liverpool target Fabio Carvalho opened the scoring after just four minutes, but Ilkay Gundogan levelled only two minutes later before John Stones put the Premier League champions in front.

Riyad Mahrez netted twice in four second-half minutes — once from the spot — to give the scoreline a comfortable feel and extend City’s winning run over the Cottagers to 12 games.

Everton romped to a convincing 4-1 win over Brentford in Frank Lampard’s first game in charge of the Toffees.

Yerry Mina opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half, before the floodgates opened after the break.

Richarlison and Ivan Toney netted within six minutes of each other, and Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend added gloss to the scoreline.

Tottenham 3-1 Brighton

Tottenham eased into the fifth round with a 3-1 home victory over fellow Premier League side Brighton.

Harry Kane and a Solly March own goal put the hosts into a comfortable lead before the break, though Yves Bissouma pulled one back on 63 minutes.

Kane scored again three minutes after the Brighton midfielder’s goal, restoring Tottenham’s two-goal cushion and sealing their spot in the draw.
