Championship Nottingham Forest pulled off the shock of the day in the FA Cup third round, knocking out 14-time winners Arsenal 1-0.
Liverpool and Tottenham both had to come from behind to spare their blushes against League One opposition, but the same could not be said for the Gunners.
Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal
Nottingham Forest defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup third round for the second time in four years, as they saw off Mikel Arteta’s side 1-0 at the City Ground.
It was a disappointing opening half in the East Midlands, with chances few and far between for both sides.
The Reds almost went ahead midway through the second half via Philip Zinckernegal but the Dane was denied by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.
Steve Cooper’s side got the breakthrough when Lewis Grabban tapped home Brennan Johnson’s cross to dump out the 2020 winners.
Liverpool 4-1 Shrewsbury
Kaide Gordon became Liverpool’s youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer as the Reds came from behind to defeat Shrewsbury 4-1 at Anfield.
The League One outfit took the lead in the 27th minute through Daniel Udoh. But Gordon soon brought Jurgen Klopp’s men level.
Fabinho then dispatched from the penalty spot after Ethan Ebanks-Landell was deemed to have handled the ball in the area.
A backheel from substitute Roberto Firmino and another Fabinho strike in injury time ensured Liverpool’s progress to the fourth round.
Tottenham 3-1 Morecambe
Tottenham also had to come from behind against League One opponents — eventually rising to see off Morecambe 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Shrimps went ahead in the 33rd minute when defender Antony O’Connor fired a volley in from 10 yards.
But their hopes of an upset soon came to an end as goals from Harry Winks, as well as substitutes Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, gave Antonio Conte’s side the victory.
West Ham 2-0 Leeds
West Ham will face National League North side Kidderminster Harriers after seeing off Leeds 2-0 at home.
Manuel Lanzini continued his rich vein of form by scoring the opening goal from close range, which prompted a lengthy VAR check in East London.
The visitors had chances of their own in the second half but neither Jack Harrison nor Daniel James were able to convert promising opportunities.
Jarrod Bowen wrapped up the game late on for David Moyes’ side, sealing the win with a cute finish after a swift counter-attack.
Wolves 3-0 Sheffield United
Daniel Podence inspired Wolves to a 3-0 win over Sheffield United in Bruno Lage’s first FA Cup tie as a manager.
The winger scored twice and assisted the other goal as the Midlanders made light work of the Championship Blades.
Podence opened the scoring then assisted Nelson Semedo, who fired into the roof of the net with 18 minutes remaining.
The Portuguese international capped off a superb display by adding a third late on after substitute Raul Jimenez dispossessed Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.
Charlton 0-1 Norwich
Milot Rashica struck to halt Norwich’s dismal run of form as the Canaries defeated League One Charlton 1-0 at The Valley.
The home side dominated for long periods of the tie but were unable to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities.
Eleven minutes from the end, Rashica tapped home Teemu Pukki’s driven cross to ensure Dean Smith side’s progress.
There was a heart-in-mouth moment for the travelling Norwich fans in stoppage-time when Ben Purrington’s header crashed against the bar but the Canaries’ clean sheet remained in tact.
