Fantasy Premier League GW22 reaction: Rashford rampant but Trippier tested

Tottenham picked up a huge victory against Manchester City on Sunday to spare Arsenal’s blushes after they lost at Everton.

The gap between the top two in the Premier League remains at five points but the Gunners could capitalise with a game in hand on the champions.

Elsewhere, Manchester United held on to see off Crystal Palace and Aston Villa’s hot streak under Unai Emery came to an end at the hands of Leicester.

Gameweek 22 has fantasy players who put their faith in Marcus Rashford jumping for joy — but those who captained Erling Haaland feeling bitterly disappointed.

Read on as we take a look at some of the weekend’s best and worst performers.

Gameweek 22 top performers

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Rashford’s form for the Red Devils is frightening and his 11th strike in 13 games in all competitions saw him pick up a respectable 12 points in the 2-1 win over Palace.

The England forward scored what proved to be the decisive second goal to help Erik ten Hag’s side climb above Newcastle and into third.

With United taking on managerless Leeds on Wednesday night, the 25-year-old has the opportunity to score some more big points in a double gameweek for the hometown hero.

Robert Sanchez (Brighton)

Robert Sanchez once again finds himself in the list of top fantasy performers after Brighton snatched a 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Spanish stopper kept his second clean sheet in three games and a couple of good saves meant he headed home with an eight-point haul.

A tasty clash against old foes Palace awaits on Saturday, but the form of Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls suggests they are more than likely to pick up another three points.

Harry Kane (Tottenham)

It may have ended up being a simple 1-0 win, but Harry Kane’s performance against City was masterful. He racked up eight fantasy points in a memorable weekend for the England captain.

He netted the only goal to bag his 200th in the Premier League and become Spurs’ all-time top scorer, overtaking Jimmy Greaves with his 267th strike for the North Londoners.

The 29-year-old will be raring to go against Leicester next Saturday and is worth keeping available as he has scored 18 league goals against the Foxes.

Gameweek 22 worst performers

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)

Kieran Trippier has not scored two points or fewer since GW13 back in October, but his performance in the 1-1 draw with West Ham had him fronting a poor return.

Newcastle were superb in the first 15 minutes at St James’ Park, but the Hammers grew into the game and picked up a deserved point, meaning the Magpies have now drawn four of their last five league matches.

Eddie Howe will take his team to former employers Bournemouth on Saturday, with Trippier hoping to get back among the fantasy points on the South Coast.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

While Kane stole the headlines, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland failed to record a single attempt on goal in a Premier League match for the first time.

His two-point tally is a rare occurrence, but there was no denying that the 22-year-old looked slightly off colour as Pep Guardiola’s men slumped to a third-straight away defeat.

Nonetheless, the Norwegian will have the chance to redeem himself when City host Aston Villa on Sunday.

Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)

Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Everton was the shock of the weekend but Sean Dyche executed his tactical plan to perfection at Goodison Park.

Much of his approach relied on keeping Martin Odegaard quiet and the midfielder’s two-point return suggests that the Toffees boss did exactly that on Merseyside.

The Norwegian will return to the Emirates on Matchday 23 but the Gunners face high-flying Brentford in what will likely be a closer affair than it looks on paper.
