Five goalscorers to back this weekend: Mbeumo and Gray catch the eye

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo and Everton’s in-form wideman Demarai Gray feature amongst our five goalscorers to watch this weekend.

Back Bryan Mbeumo to score anytime @ 6/4

With doubts over the availability of leading goalscorer Ivan Toney, Brentford’s goalscoring responsibilities could land on the shoulders of Cameroon international Mbeumo.

Even without Toney, Thomas Frank’s Bees were hugely impressive in their last Premier League outing, beating Liverpool 3-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium, when Mbeumo rounded off the scoring.

Mbeumo has to play second-fiddle when Toney is available but is likely to be the main man when a Bournemouth side with a woeful defensive record arrive in west London.

The Cherries have conceded a massive 29 goals in nine Premier League away matches this season, shipping goals at an average of 3.22 per game.

And with only four top-flight teams scoring more goals at home than Brentford, the stage is set for Mbeumo to set up.

Back Demarai Gray to score anytime @ 11/5

Demarai Gray’s performances have been one bright spot in a bleak spell for Everton, with the winger scoring in three of the Toffees’ last six competitive matches, including a world-class strike at Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.

This weekend’s visitors, Southampton, have conceded a hefty 33 goals in 18 Premier League matches this season and have shipped 14 in losing each of their last six league outings, so should offer up plenty of chances.

With defensive attention usually focused on Everton’s number nine, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Gray could capitalise on the spaces afforded to him and is an excellent price to net this weekend at 11/5.

Back Brennan Johnson to score anytime @ 3/1

Leicester’s post-World Cup malaise is threatening to drag them back into the relegation scrap and defeat at the City Ground would see East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest leapfrog them in the table.

Forest will be confident of doing so having gone unbeaten in their last five Premier League home games — a run of results that take in victory over Liverpool and a draw against Chelsea — and Brennan Johnson could be the man to get them going.

The Welshman is not prolific but is in terrific form, providing the assist in Forest’s win at Southampton in their last league outing and getting four shots away against Chelsea in the previous match.

It is only a matter of time until the 21-year-old starts adding goals to his game in the top flight and he could find Leicester obliging opponents as the Foxes have conceded eight goals in losing all four matches against Premier League rivals since the World Cup.

Back Chuba Akpom to score anytime @ 9/5

Chuba Akpom has been tearing it up for Middlesbrough this season and is leading the Championship goalscoring charts with 13 goals in 19 league appearances.

He has netted 11 goals in his last 10 appearances, including one against Premier League Brighton in the FA Cup last weekend, and is up against a Millwall side who have conceded two or more goals in seven of their 12 Championship away games this term.

Back Lautaro Martinez to score anytime

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez will have mixed feelings about his World Cup campaign, claiming glory with Argentina but finding himself relegated from regular starter to bit-part player after failing to find his form in front of goal.

However, he has shown no ill-effects of either losing confidence or focus following his time celebrating with the national team, scoring in both of his two starts for the Nerazzurri since returning to Milan.

Perhaps we will now see the best of a relaxed and fully-focused Martinez and, while he has a lot of catching up to do to match last season’s incredible 34-goal haul, he should get chances to add to his 2022-23 tally when Verona arrive at the San Siro on Saturday evening.
