Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football following Belgium’s group-stage exit at the World Cup in Qatar.
Hazard, 31, was unable to recapture his best form in the tournament and was part of a team that finished third in Group F behind Morocco and Croatia.
The Real Madrid forward featured 126 times for his country and scored 33 goals, but was unable to bring success to the Red Devils despite being the talisman of their golden generation.
His biggest achievement for Belgium was a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup, where he featured in a 1-0 semi-final loss to France.
Hazard took to Instagram to announce his retirement, where he thanked his compatriots for their support.
He said: “Today we turn a page. Thank you for your love. Thank you for your unmatched support. Thank you for all the joyous moments we’ve shared since 2008.
“Today I decided to put an end to my career as an international. The next generation is ready. I’m going to miss you guys so much.”
Making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Luxembourg in 2008, the talented playmaker was vital in helping his country transform into a powerhouse in world football.
He would go on to captain Belgium 56 times and led by example for his 14 years on the international stage.
Averaging a goal every 126 minutes, Hazard always provided entertainment on the pitch and was capable of putting spectators on the edge of their seats.
And with four goals at major tournaments for his country, the 5ft 9in maestro will be remembered fondly for his time in a red shirt.
Hazard’s retirement is no surprise and comes alongside the departure of head coach Roberto Martinez — who left after the 0-0 draw with Croatia.
He will now return to Madrid where he has 18 months left on his current deal that runs until 2024.
There is speculation surrounding the former Chelsea man’s future at Los Blancos with the forward featuring only three times in LaLiga this season.
Reports have linked him with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu but injury concerns could be a deal breaker for any potential suitor.
