Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr hailed a “fantastic win” against the San Antonio Spurs despite being without several key players.
The Warriors moved to 39-13 in the Western Conference after the 124-120 victory at AT&T Center, overcoming the absences of Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.
Jordan Poole starred with 31 points, six rebounds and five assists as Golden State recorded a seventh straight win after a 35-16 fourth quarter rally.
Speaking at a media conference after the game, Kerr make particular mention of the younger players who had played a part in the victory, and how invested his more experienced stars are in their development.
“Our vets who didn’t play are so excited in there,” he said, adding that it had been “a fantastic win for us.”
“Between Steph, Klay, Loon [Kevon Looney], Draymond and Andre [Iguodala], we have guys who have been through this and they’re really invested in our young players’ future, and that’s pretty unique and crucial. It shows you the kind of commitment our players have and what kind of character they have.
“They really care about these young guys, they want to bring them along the right way and our coaching staff is doing a great job working hard with these young guys and trying to teach them and bring them along.
“It’s really an organisational success in my mind that we’ve been able to balance winning now at 39-13 and still trying to develop these guys for the future.”
Poole was the standout player on the night, and the 22-year-old also spoke to reporters after the win, pointing to the advice he received from Curry all game long.
“It shows what our character is like,” he said. “Coming all the way from the top of the food chain all the way down. Everybody’s excited for each other [and] wants to see everybody succeed. Steph was just talking to me the entire game giving out any piece of advice.
“It’s just amazing to have the camaraderie and chemistry that we have [as a team].”
