Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is having tests after complaining of breathing difficulties, which the club say are not related to a COVID-19 outbreak.
Lindelof was substituted for Eric Bailly in the second half of United’s 1-0 Premier League win at Norwich City on Saturday after suffering chest problems.
The Red Devils then saw some players and staff return positive coronavirus tests after the return journey from Carrow Road, which prompted the Premier League to postpone Tuesday’s fixture with Brentford.
However, United clarified that Lindelof’s concerns – from which he had made a good recovery – were not linked to the infections that forced them to close the training ground.
“Victor is currently undergoing a series of precautionary investigations,” the club said in a statement. “However, he has recovered well from the episode he experienced in the match against Norwich.
“All indications are that this is not linked to any COVID outbreak within the club.”
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick said after the win over Norwich: “Victor can’t even remember himself how it happened. I think he had a collision with another player and had problems to breathe.
“For more than 10 minutes his heart rate was higher than normal, and he was a little shocked by this, so we had to replace him.”
Goalkeeper David de Gea said it was “a bit difficult to see” Lindelof struggling and that it brought back memories of Christian Eriksen, who collapsed on the pitch during Euro 2020, and Sergio Aguero, who is expected to announce his retirement this week after suffering chest pains in a match in October.
“First of all is life. Football doesn’t matter,” he told Sky Sports.
“We saw some players who are feeling a bit, I don’t know what was going on, but Victor was feeling his breathing.
“We saw already Eriksen, Aguero… so it is sometimes a bit difficult to see your player acting like this. I hope he is completely fine.”
