Liverpool beat rivals to Benfica hotshot Nunez

Darwin Nunez is ready to “give everything” after sealing a £64million switch from Benfica to Liverpool.

The Uruguayan has agreed a six-year contract with the Reds, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

And his arrival is set to smash his new club’s transfer record, which was set when Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for £75m in 2018.

Including add-ons, ranging from how many goals he scores to whether Liverpool win the Champions League, Nunez’s fee could end up hitting £85m.

The new arrival said: “I’m really happy and delighted to be here at Liverpool. I’m very happy to be a part of this great club.

“I’ve played against Liverpool and I’ve seen them in lots of games in the Champions League.

“There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play.

“As I say, I’ve watched quite a lot and I hope I can give everything I’ve got in order to help the team.”

Nunz scored 34 goals in 41 appearances last season — including two against his new employers — and joins an already potent Reds attack.

Jurgen Klopp moved swiftly to bring in the 22-year-old star, who had been linked with Manchester United and a host of top European clubs.

And Liverpool fans will be delighted to see the goalscorer on their books after title rivals Manchester City landed superstar striker Erling Haaland earlier this summer.

Nunez, who will wear the No27 shirt at Anfield, added: “When I arrived at the training ground, I was really surprised to see the set-up and the structure and all the trophies here.

“You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies. That’s one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool — to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool.”
