Give Conte what he needs
Jamie Redknapp has urged Tottenham to back Antonio Conte in the transfer market — but admits the January sales will not be enough to dramatically improve the squad.
Spurs suffered their third defeat to London rivals Chelsea this month as they went down 2-0 at Stamford Bridge yesterday.
The loss left Conte once again stressing that the gulf between his side and the top clubs would take some time to address.
And Redknapp, who enjoyed a spell with Tottenham between July 2002 and January 2005, clearly agrees. The Sky Sports pundit, 48. said: “He needs players.
“When he came in after Nuno [Espirito Santo], there must have been some dialogue between him and Daniel Levy about the players he needs.
“There’s a massive gulf between Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool and the rest. Tottenham are so close to getting top four, which no other manager could have done, but he needs backing.
“He needs to get players in quickly — two, three, four players in the window. So back him, give him what he needs.”
Frank is buzzing
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has extended his contract until the summer of 2025.
The Dane, who was appointed head coach in October 2018, led the Bees into the Premier League for the first time by winning the Championship play-offs last season.
His deal was due to expire at the end of next term but both he and assistant head coach Brian Riemer have signed fresh terms.
Brentford director of football Phil Giles said: “On behalf of everyone at Brentford, I’d like to congratulate Thomas and Brian on their new contracts.
“First and foremost, they are fantastic people to work with and I’m sure everyone at the club will be pleased they have committed to stay with us until 2025.
“They have been integral to the success we’ve shared over recent seasons, culminating in achieving our shared target of playing in the Premier League.
“We want to continue to take Brentford forward, to compete with clubs far bigger than us, and to see how far we can progress.
“I am sure we can build on the success Thomas and Brian have helped deliver along with all of the other staff and players and look forward to what I hope will be a successful conclusion to the season and beyond.”
Hard graft
Callum Hudson-Odoi admits Chelsea’s stars have found their fixture list hard going in recent weeks.
The winger laid on an assist for Hakim Ziyech as the Blues dispatched Spurs yesterday.
And while he and his team-mates would prefer to have more rest between games, he insists they will never use it as an excuse for bad results.
Hudson-Odoi, 21. said: “It’s been difficult. We’ve had to rest less and play more.
“We know games come thick and fast and they are very challenging. Sometimes the rest hasn’t been enough for us.
“But at the same time, we have to get on with it and play every game as well as we can do.”
