Williamson: Bring on the noise
England skipper Leah Williamson hailed the crowd after the Lionesses began their Women’s Euro 2022 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Austria.
The 25-year-old defender admitted it will take time for the side to get used to playing in stadiums louder than they have previously experienced.
Beth Mead’s strike settled the game at Old Trafford and Williamson revealed she had to shut her eyes during the national anthem to stop the tears from flowing.
She said: “What an occasion. The fans came out, we connected well.
“It was pretty special, I had no idea what to expect. We embraced it really well.
“I kept my eyes closed during the national anthem. If I’d looked at mum I’d have started crying. I kept it at bay.
“It’s loud, communication becomes harder. At times it gets in the way but I’d take that any day.
“You don’t have to be at your best in the first game and you can grow. Points on the board is the most important thing.
“We’ve dealt with pressure and expectation and it’s over now. Good start.”
Northern Ireland’s underdogs
For the first time in their history, Northern Ireland’s women will compete in a major tournament.
And their opening game sees them take on Ada Hegerberg and two-time European champions Norway.
The Green and White Army only turned professional in January and at 47th in the world are the lowest ranked side in the competition.
But skipper Marissa Callaghan, 36, says the squad are relaxed ahead of tonight’s clash at St Mary’s.
“Surprisingly the camp is really calm,” Callaghan said. “It’s a massive occasion, we know that, but we are trying to take it all in.
“The camp is in really good form. We are excited and ready to get into it.
“They are one of the top teams in the world — we know that they are giants of European football.
“We are up for the challenge. We are Northern Ireland, we are underdogs. We have prepared immensely.”
Corberan departs Huddersfield
Carlos Corberan has sensationally quit as Huddersfield boss less than four weeks before the new Championship season starts.
The Spaniard’s decision is said to be amicable after he decided his vision for the future did not match the club’s.
Corberan, 39, guided the Terriers to the play-off final last term despite being among the pre-season favourites for relegation.
They lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest but that was a remarkable turnaround for the West Yorkshire club after they finished 20th under his stewardship the season prior.
Head of football operations Leigh Bromby said: “It is with sadness that we have accepted Carlos’ resignation.
“He was obviously a big part of what was a fantastic season in 2021-22, but he has subsequently come to us over the last 24 hours and made it clear that he doesn’t think he is the man to take us forward.
“The timing is disappointing, with our preparations for the new season already under way.
“However, we have worked very hard here over the last few years to build a coaching and support structure around the first team that gives us continuity and stability when there’s change.
“We’ve also created succession plans for every eventuality.”
First-team coach Danny Schofield will take over as head coach for the new campaign.
