Gallagher ready for Blues breakthrough
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher feels he is finally ready to make his breakthrough at the club after being given assurances by manager Thomas Tuchel.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a superb season on loan at Crystal Palace in 2021-22 which saw him earn his first senior England caps.
But while the Cobham academy graduate is yet to make his first-team bow for the Blues, he is determined to make himself a key man next term as he targets a World Cup spot later this year.
He told BBC Sport: “I feel like this is the season.
“I’ve been a Chelsea fan my whole life, my family have, it’s been a dream to play [for Chelsea] but I want to try and impress, and play as much football as I can and affect the game when I’m on the pitch.
“[Tuchel] said he wants me to be part of the squad and to prove myself in pre-season, so that’s the plan. I’m happy with that and just willing to work as hard as I can to prove to him that I can play for Chelsea.
“It’s what I wanted to hear, it was a nice phone call that we had and it gave me a clear plan of pre-season and where I’m going to be. It was great to hear.”
Forest sign Hennessey
Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey from Burnley.
The Wales international has signed a two-year deal at the City Ground as he looks to keep him himself fighting fit ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
Hennessey, 35, brings a vast amount of Premier League experience to the newly-promoted side having made 183 top-flight appearances across spells at Wolves, Crystal Palace and the Clarets.
He will likely play back-up between the sticks to Dean Henderson, who has joined on loan from Manchester United.
Hennessey said: “I’ve come up against Forest a lot in the past and it’s a fantastic club. There’s a great fanbase and the atmosphere at the City Ground is up there with the best in the game. It’ll be a different level now that we’re back in the Premier League.
“I have also played with and against a few of the Forest players. It’s a very exciting time to come on board and I can’t wait to get involved and start training here at the Nigel Doughty Academy.”
Euro 2022 breaks record
Euro 2022 is already the most attended Women’s European Championship ever despite it still being the group stage.
The 8,173 fans who watched France beat Belgium 2-1 in Rotherham took the total for the tournament to 248,075 people.
That is already the more than the previous 240,055 total supporters who attended Euro 2017 in the Netherlands.
With 15 games remaining, including an expected record crowd at Wembley for the final, that figure is set to be shattered in the coming weeks.
England’s Euro 2022 opener against Austria was attended by a record-breaking 68,871 fans, which is over 27,000 clear of the previous best when Germany beat Norway in the 2013 final in Sweden.
