Lamps back in the running
Frank Lampard is battling it out with Vitor Pereira to succeed Rafa Benitez as Everton boss.
Pereira had appeared to be in pole position to fill the vacancy following Benitez’s sacking last week.
But fan protests and an interview the 53-year-old tactician gave to Sky Sports yesterday have given fresh hope to Lampard, who has been out of work since being axed by Chelsea in January 2021.
Referring to critical graffiti daubed outside Goodison Park, Pereira said: “They don’t know me very well. They don’t know my work, they don’t know me as a person, they don’t know my CV.
“I worked in a lot of countries — different clubs, different levels. We got several titles. Before you know the person, you cannot judge.
“But I understand the feeling of the supporters because the last years the club didn’t get good results. It’s normal they are not happy.”
Is Roberto the Man for United?
Reports suggest Italy boss Roberto Mancini could be heading back to Manchester.
Mancini, 57, led Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 2012 but was sacked in May 2013.
He went on to manage Galatasaray, Inter Milan and Zenit Saint Petersburg before taking on the role of national coach.
And it appears he could now be in the frame to become Manchester United’s next permanent boss.
Baggies explain Johnstone absence
West Brom boss Valerien Ismael has revealed England keeper Sam Johnstone sat out last night’s 2-0 defeat to Preston because of an ‘internal issue’.
Johnstone, 28, was available to play after serving a three-match ban following his red card against Cardiff earlier this month.
But Ismael has confirmed the three-cap international will also not be considered for Saturday’s trip to Millwall.
He said: “We had an issue internally. It is solved now but that is the reason he wasn’t in the squad and won’t be on Saturday.
“But after that he will be back.”
