Germany boss expects classic final
Germany boss Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is expecting the Women’s Euro 2022 final against England to be a “football feast”.
The eight-time champions booked their spot in Sunday’s showpiece by beating France 2-1 at Stadium MK last night.
Now they have to face the Lionesses, who will be backed by the vast majority of the 90,000-strong Wembley crowd.
And Voss-Tecklenburg is clearly excited at the magnitude of the occasion.
She said: “It’s a classic game, it will be an incredible final.
“We look forward to this game, as everyone will do in England and in Germany.
“We will be playing at Wembley in front of 80 or 90,000 people and most of them for England and against us but we understand that and we’re accepting the challenge.
“England have been incredible in this tournament for dynamism and lots of goals. They are so incredibly confident.
“They know what they have to do but in the first 30 minutes against Sweden, they showed you can hurt them and that will be our task. It will be a great football feast.”
No extra Bank Holiday if England win
The government has ruled out an extra Bank Holiday should England beat Germany on Sunday.
There had been calls from Labour leader Keir Starmer, as well as Conservative former sports minister Tracey Crouch and Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey for a day of celebration.
Ahead of last summer’s men’s Euro 2020 final between England and Italy, Boris Johnson said it would be “tempting fate” to grant one before the game, which the Three Lions went on to lose.
Despite growing clamour on social media for an extra day off, the government has cited the “considerable” cost as one of the reasons it will definitely not be granted this time around.
“The Lionesses have done England proud with their fantastic run to the Euro 2022 final,” a spokesperson said.
“The whole country will be roaring them on and hopefully watching a famous victory against Germany on Sunday evening. We will certainly be celebrating their success.
“However, the current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and while an additional bank holiday may benefit some communities and sectors, the cost to the economy of an additional bank holiday is considerable.”
Elliott: Reds must find cutting edge
Harvey Elliott knows Liverpool have to be more ruthless in front of goal after a 1-0 friendly defeat to Red Bull Salzburg.
The Reds lost to a first-half Benjamin Sesko strike but had plenty of chances to level after the break.
Many of the Reds’ first-team stars only played limited minutes as they continue to build their fitness ahead of the new campaign.
Their final warm-up game is the Community Shield meeting with Manchester City on Saturday at the King Power Stadium.
Elliott said: “I think that was our main concern today — obviously our finishing and our ability to finish situations off.
“We had so many chances and obviously luck didn’t come with us as well today. At least we created the chances, at least we got into the positions to finish it off but it’s just a shame we couldn’t do that today.
“But hopefully we can reflect and work on it in the couple of days that we have leading up to the weekend and make sure we put it right when it matters on the weekend against City.
“Spirits are high in the changing room. It’s not nice losing but a lot of positives to take and at least we got into situations where we could’ve finished the chances off. Let’s hope we can do it on the weekend.”
