Robles signs for Leeds
Leeds have completed the signing of ex-Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles on a one-year deal.
The Spaniard, 32, joins as back-up to first-choice stopper Illan Meslier in Jesse Marsch’s squad.
Robles has spent the past four years at LaLiga side Real Betis, making 78 appearances for the Andalusian outfit.
He said: “I’m really excited after four years to be back [in England] and at this fantastic club.
“Thank you to Leeds for giving me this great opportunity at this special football club. I’m excited to come here.
“My objective this season is to keep my mentality, work hard and obviously help my team-mates.
“We are three keepers and we work together to help the team. That is the objective for everyone.”
Kristoffer Klaesson is the other senior stopper on the Elland Road books, while Robles becomes the Whites’ seventh senior signing of the summer.
United dealt Sesko blow
RB Salzburg hotshot Benjamin Sesko will move to RB Leipzig next summer in a blow to Manchester United’s transfer plans.
Slovenian teenager Sesko, 19, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, while Newcastle were also tipped with an interest.
But he has instead opted to move to the Bundesliga, as the likes of Erling Haaland and Karim Adeyemi have done so before him.
It leaves United still searching for strikers, having also been linked with Marko Arnautovic.
Leipzig sporting director Christopher Vivell said: “Benjamin Sesko is one of Europe’s best young talents and has a great amount of potential to become one of the best.
“He offers a lot in his game, he’s extremely fast, has a great jumping reach and is strong in the air. Benjamin has a true eye for goal and, despite his height, is technically gifted and mobile. His qualities make him a unique and special player.
“I’ve known Benjamin since he was 15 and was able to convince him to come to Salzburg in 2019. Since then, I’ve followed his development closely and have seen every goal that he’s scored.
“The best option is for Benjamin to continue in Salzburg for one more year and mature before coming to Leipzig.”
Sarr’s mixed night
Watford winger Ismaila Sarr scored from his own half before missing a penalty on a topsy-turvy night at West Brom.
The Hornets left the Hawthorns with a point following the 1-1 draw, which saw Sarr give them the lead against the run of play with a moment of magic.
After bringing the ball down, he struck it perfectly to leave Baggies keeper David Button stranded as it flew into the back of the net after 12 minutes.
After Karlan Grant equalised for the hosts, Sarr then saw Button save a poor penalty in the 73rd minute as Watford boss Rob Edwards conceded there was no way they deserved all three points.
Edwards said: “It was an incredible strike from Sarr. As soon as it left his foot I knew it was in.
“A moment of genius. It’s pretty special when you see a goal like that — and against the run of play too.
“It would have been pretty unjust if we had nicked that second goal from the penalty as Albion were up for it and were clearly the better side. But I’d have taken it.”
Coventry’s pitch woes
After postponing their first home game of the season against Rotherham on Sunday, Coventry have now been forced to move their next game 45 miles away.
The Sky Blues will host Bristol City at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium tomorrow night in the Carabao Cup, with the playing surface at the Coventry Building Society Arena still deemed unfit for a game.
Owned by rugby club Wasps, the ground was used for the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7s tournament, which has left the playing surface short of grass.
Other more local options were not available for Wednesday night, leaving Coventry set to play at a fourth different home ground in recent years.
They have spent seasons at Northampton and Birmingham over arguments with both Wasps and the previous landlords.
Wigan are the next scheduled visitors to the CBS in seven days and chief executive Dave Boddy promised fans regular updates.
He said: “Following the usage at the Commonwealth Games, our first opportunity to survey the pitch in person was on Thursday due to the stadium lockdown, at which point we put the wheels in motion with the EFL and with the Arena to address this issue.
“We are in dialogue with the Arena about the situation regarding the pitch and will keep fans updated as soon as we are able to regarding the pitch.”
