Fergie time is over
Former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez believes the club must stop dwelling on the Alex Ferguson era if they are to enjoy future success.
United won 13 league titles during the Scot’s 27-year reign at Old Trafford, but have fallen from grace since his departure in 2013.
The Red Devils lost their opening match of the season at home to Brighton and go into Saturday evening’s game at Brentford already facing criticism.
And for current boss Erik ten Hag to build a team capable of winning the English top flight, Hernandez believes it is time for United to draw a line under their past.
He said: “To substitute a man like that is not easy. It is like winning the lottery.
“Do you think anyone you hire afterwards is going to be able to do 80% of what Ferguson did?
“My point of view is that after Ferguson, it brings so much pressure that it just isn’t going to work out.
“United need to now get over the fact that Alex Ferguson has gone.
“Would we like to have someone similar? Yes, yes, yes. But Sir Alex has gone and it is never going to be the same.
“So United have to adapt and allow the next manager to do it in his own way.”
Rangers power on
Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst relished another victorious European night at Ibrox after his side overturned a 2-0 deficit against Union Saint-Gilloise to qualify for the Champions League play-off round.
James Tavernier’s penalty moments before half-time broke the deadlock before second-half goals from Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman earned the Glaswegians a tie with Eredivisie giants PSV.
Van Bronckhorst’s men enjoyed a run to the Europa League final last term, and the Dutch coach was thrilled to see his team win another knockout clash.
Van Bronckhorst, 47, said: “We needed a big performance and the pressure was on us after last week.
“We know we are capable of delivering big nights for the club. But still, you have to do it over and over again.
“That’s why I am so proud of my players, the way they played, with passion, with desire, with fire to go to the next round.
“That is the only way you have to be on the pitch, to create the atmosphere we created with the fans.
“It was an amazing night for all of us.”
