Lamps: Me and Gerrard have it tough
Everton boss Frank Lampard believes he and Steven Gerrard face a higher level of scrutiny as managers due to their glittering playing careers.
Lampard, 44, takes his Toffees side to Aston Villa tomorrow lunchtime to take on former England team-mate Gerrard’s side.
With both clubs having endured tough campaigns last term and starting their new seasons with defeat last weekend, the clash looks to hold plenty of significance.
Yet Lampard only has positive words to say about his opposite number, while also seeing similarities in how their post-playing careers have progressed.
He said: “We didn’t discuss management as players but definitely more frequently when we were both working in the media. Stevie was working at Liverpool then and I was trying to get my badges.
“We are both very driven and had a plan and an idea of what we wanted to do. I was pleased to see Steven do it as we need more good, young, English coaches.
“When you have careers like ours, you probably get analysed more, but we have to put that to one side.
“I know Stevie is a hard worker, so I’m delighted he has done so well with Rangers and is now at a club with the quality of Aston Villa.”
Klopp wants sharper Reds start
Jurgen Klopp is determined to see Liverpool fly out of the traps against Crystal Palace on Monday night.
The Reds dropped two points at Fulham last weekend and were somewhat fortunate to escape with a 2-2 draw, having twice trailed at Craven Cottage.
And it was an unusually lacklustre beginning in West London which irked the 55-year-old German most.
Klopp said: “We had a slow start. I didn’t like it at all. I saw the attitude to fight back but that is a different thing.
“It is better you have a lively start in a football game than not. The first pass we go to the full-back and the next one gets blocked by the winger. It took too long.
“We did not play a good game and still could have scored more goals. We had our moments in the second half but we try to make sure we are ready for this game. We are more often ready than not.
“Having a slow start does not mean you will do it again but it is a sign so use it as information and go from there.”
They will welcome an Eagles side to Anfield who are also searching for a first win, having lost their opener 2-0 to Arsenal last Friday.
Defoe back at Tottenham
Jermain Defoe has joined his former club Tottenham as an academy coach and club ambassador.
Ex-England striker Defoe, 39, netted 143 goals in 363 Spurs appearances across two spells in North London and is the club’s sixth-highest goalscorer of all time.
He called time on his playing career back in March after cutting short a brief return to Sunderland.
A club statement read: “Jermain now begins the next phase of his career by joining our academy set-up, where he will work closely alongside our existing coaching team to lend his vast experience and knowledge to young players across the Under-17 to Under-21 age categories.
“He also assumes the position of club ambassador as part of his new role, which will see him once again assist with the club’s work in our community, engage with our global fanbase and support club partners.”
