Shear joy
Alan Shearer believes his beloved Newcastle can secure European football this season.
Speaking in his BBC Sport column, the Toon legend, 52, said: “Newcastle could have a chance of being the best of the rest.
“One aim for the Magpies, without doubt, will be to improve upon last season when they finished 11th.
“In fact, they were only three points adrift of eighth place after a shocking start.
“Five points from three games this time, considering they had champions Manchester City and Brighton away, makes it a really positive start.
“I feel a Europa Conference League spot is a realistic target, which you can achieve by claiming seventh spot.”
After falling behind to City on Sunday, Newcastle stormed back to lead 3-1 at St James’ Park before Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva salvaged a point for Pep Guardiola’s side.
No deal
Aston Villa’s proposed swoop for Watford forward Ismaila Sarr has fallen through.
The Senegal international, 24, was expected to join the Villans after the two clubs agreed a deal believed to be in the region of £25m.
But it is understood complications arose over the structure of the offer and Sarr’s personal terms.
Loan ranger
Villa have loaned Bertrand Traore to Istanbul Basaksehir for the rest of the season.
Traore, 26, joined the Midlands outfit from Lyon in September 2020 for £17million but has found regular football at Villa Park hard to come by.
A brief statement on the club’s website said: “Aston Villa can confirm Bertrand Traore has joined Istanbul Basaksehir FK on loan until the end of the season.
“The forward signed for Villa in September 2020 and would go on to score eight goals in all competitions in his maiden campaign.
“Last term, injuries limited his appearances in claret and blue, although he did represent Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Good luck, Bertie!”
