Howe wants more signings
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants to add “at least one” fresh face to his squad before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.
The Magpies had to come from behind to see off League Two Tranmere 2-1 in the Carabao Cup last night and will face fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace in round three next month.
Speaking after that hard-fought result, the Toon boss confessed that incomings are still a priority on Tyneside over the next eight days.
Howe, 44, said: “It’s difficult to put a number on it but we’d like at least one [more signing].
“We were looking at the attacking areas of the pitch, I don’t think that’s a huge secret. I won’t go into any more detail on that at the moment.”
Various reports yesterday suggested a £60million deal for Real Sociedad marksman Alexander Isak had been agreed in principle.
The Swedish international, 22, has long been one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers and has attracted the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid in recent times.
Scott wants to stay in football
England stalwart Jill Scott has no intention of stepping away from the beautiful game despite officially hanging up her boots.
Scott, 35, followed team-mate Ellen White in announcing her retirement earlier this week after helping the Lionesses to a first major tournament triumph at Women’s Euro 2022 this summer.
But the Sunderland-born star now wants to help develop the stars of the future — and admits she is open to offers.
She said: “It’s been my whole life since the age of five. Every weekend I’ve had a football match, so I don’t think it’d be possible for me to move away from that.
“I am hoping I can get involved in some coaching with the younger age groups and the younger girls in England — that’s kind of trying to do a shout out for a job there!
“But I don’t plan in advance, so that is down to me really.”
Scott amassed 161 caps for her country having made her debut in 2006, ranking her second on the Lionesses’ all-time appearance list.
New Champions League balls unveiled
This season’s Champions League official match ball has been unveiled by adidas — with an exclusive design for the women’s competition also included for the first time.
The group stage draw for this season’s competition takes place this evening and with it comes a chance for fans to see the latest version of the iconic football.
A statement from adidas read: “Inspired by the absence of light in space and how the stars shine out against the dark void, the refracted overlays and silver rays communicate the mastering of all dimensions and the battle for the biggest stage of men’s and women’s club football.”
Both of the new balls are available to purchase from adidas.co.uk.
O’Neill axed by Stoke
Championship outfit Stoke have parted company with manager Michael O’Neill.
Former Northern Ireland boss O’Neill, 53, had been in charge since November 2019 and leaves the Potters in 19th place having taken just four points from their opening five league matches this term.
Last Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland proved to be the final straw for the owners, who thanked O’Neill for his efforts in a statement this morning.
Joint chairman John Coates said: “Michael joined us in November 2019 when the club was in a difficult situation and the job he did in stabilising our position in the Championship should not be underestimated.
“Michael has worked tirelessly and with extreme professionalism, particularly in reshaping our squad and developing young players, but we feel the time is right to move in a different direction.
“I would like to thank him for his efforts and wish him every success for the future.”
Assistant manager Dean Holden has taken interim charge while the club search for a replacement.
