Hammers miss out on Zapata
West Ham failed with a late bid to snap up Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata before the transfer window slammed shut last night.
The Hammers have monitored Zapata, 30, since 2013 when he played for Estudiantes in Argentina.
But despite reportedly submitting a deal sheet to the Premier League having reached an agreement with Atalanta, they did not manage to get the transfer over the line in time.
Carvalho stays put
Fabio Carvalho is still a Fulham player after Liverpool ran out of time to complete a deal for the 19-year-old attacker.
It was widely believed the Reds would loan Carvalho straight back to the Cottagers had they managed to land him.
But he is now set to see out the final six months of his contract at Craven Cottage before leaving as a free agent in the summer.
Defoe returns to the Stadium of Light
Jermain Defoe was all smiles after sealing his return to Sunderland.
The veteran striker, 39, originally joined the Black Cats in January 2015 but departed in June 2017 after they were relegated from the Premier League.
Having been released by Scottish champions Rangers earlier this month, Defoe was delighted to return to the Stadium of Light as a free agent.
He said: “I can’t stop smiling because this is a special move for me for many reasons. I said I would come back one day and I wasn’t ready to leave when I left.
“I have a special bond with the fans here and the club is in a fantastic position to get promoted. I want to be a part of more special times here and I’m looking forward to it.”
Sunderland are third in League One but are currently managerless after sacking head coach Lee Johnson following a 6-0 drubbing at Bolton last Saturday.
