Lamps sees the light
Frank Lampard believes Everton are on the right track after Saturday’s Merseyside derby draw with Liverpool.
The Toffees played their part in an entertaining stalemate at Goodison Park as they picked up a point for the fourth game running.
Although a first victory of the campaign is proving elusive, 44-year-old Lamps reckons things are moving in the right direction.
He said: “We’ve tried to recruit players who can receive the ball, be comfortable on the ball and make the right decisions.
“A lot of the decisions made [against Liverpool] were a sign of improving against an intense, high-pressing team. We want to keep going in that direction.
“We’re far from the finished article and what we want in that way. We want to have more control, more possession.
“But I think we saw the ability. It’s good for the lads to feel that. We need to keep working on that.”
The draw saw Neal Maupay make his Everton debut after arriving from Brighton, while there was also a cameo for returning midfielder Idrissa Gueye, a deadline-day capture from Paris Saint-Germain.
Staveley’s sleepless night
Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley is in desperate need of some shut-eye after her side’s VAR nightmare on Saturday.
The North East outfit saw what would have been a winning goal ruled out against Crystal Palace for a foul on Joe Willock, despite the midfielder appearing to be fouled himself.
It left Staveley furious, with the 49-year-old telling Tyneside Life: “I had a sleepless night. We should have won — I hated the VAR decision.
“Obviously, that’s something we’re dealing with and it seems to be a consistent theme of the last few games.
“We are dealing with that and we’re talking to officials, trying to get something we think will work going forward.”
West Ham were also left incensed after seeing a late equaliser chalked off against Chelsea — a decision Hammers boss David Moyes described as “scandalous”.
Referees’ body PGMOL have since taken the unusual step of publicly addressing the two incidents, stating they will comply with a Premier League investigation.
