Wiegman hails perfect campaign
Sarina Wiegman admitted she does not think England’s World Cup qualifying campaign could have gone any better after completing a clean sweep of wins with a 10-0 victory over Luxembourg.
A dominant display from the European champions saw them score five goals in each half against the minnows at Stoke’s Bet365 Stadium last night.
Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Rachel Daly, Beth Mead, Beth England, Nikita Parris, Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp were all on the scoresheet for the Lionesses as they hit double figures for the fifth time in the campaign.
Reflecting on their perfect record, manager Wiegman said: “I don’t think it could be much better than this, so really happy.
“And I think this camp after the Euros always seems to be a hard one, but I think the team has done a tremendous job coming out of the summer.
“Everyone came in very differently, then you play two games like this, and we knew of course tonight we were so much better than Luxembourg but still, we had to make the tempo of the game, keep the energy in the game.
“That’s what we really wanted to do, and I think that’s what we did in most parts of the game. And a 10-0 is really nice to go home with.”
Wales make the nation proud
Wales boss Gemma Grainger says her team have made the nation proud after they reached the play-offs for a major tournament for the first time.
A goalless home draw with Slovenia ensured a second-placed finish for Wales in World Cup qualifying Group I.
They will be in Friday’s play-off draw as they stand just two games away from a place at the global showpiece in Australia and New Zealand next summer.
“I’m so pleased for the players, they deserve everything that they get,” Grainger said.
“It has been an exceptional campaign. We have developed.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the players. The players need to take all the credit, the 12,000 supporters here tonight were behind us and we fed off that.
“Now we want even more. We don’t mind who we get in the draw, we don’t have a preference.
“We will look at the play-offs as game 11 and game 12, but we can at least talk about them now.”
